Darwin consolidated a lifetime of work in On the Origin of Species, compiling his discoveries from the voyage of the Beagle, his experiments, research and correspondence. He argues for the transmutation of species over time by the process of natural selection. His work laid the foundation of evolutionary biology, though when it was published it caused tremendous religious and philosophical debates. Darwin's work is still seen by many people to oppose Christian beliefs.

Charles Darwin's groundbreaking work of evolutionary biology, The Origin of Species introduces the scientific theory of evolution, which posits that species evolve over a period of many generations through a process of natural selection. Darwin's theories have been widely embraced by the scientific community as fact and have laid the foundation for subsequent major advances in the field of biology. It is arguably one of the most important scientific treatises ever written. This is the sixth edition of the formative text of evolutionary biology.

In this highly readable study, one of the great pioneers of modern science examines how people and animals display varieties of emotions via their facial expressions. British naturalist Charles Darwin -- who expounded the theory of evolution by natural selection, the principle that launched a scientific revolution -- based this survey on his personal observations. Most of his findings were proven by later research, and today's behavioral scientists continue to draw upon this work for both knowledge and inspiration. A bestseller when it was first published in 1872, Darwin's inquiry addresses issues related to human origins and psychology in terms of evolutionary values. His methods include the study of facial expressions in infants and children, the insane, animals, painting and sculpture, and among people in different cultures. Also notable is the fact that this is one of the first books to employ photographs in the interests of science. Abounding in anecdotes and literary quotations, the work offers a direct approach that makes it accessible to professionals and amateurs alike -- in fact, to anyone with an inquiring mind.

This volume contains, in the form of a Journal, a history of the voyage of the HMS Beagle, and a sketch of those observations in Natural History and Geology made by Charles Darwin. Perhaps this printing of the famed naturalist's voyage will inspire the reader, young or old. As Charles Darwin said, in his own words, "It appears to me that nothing can be more improving to a young naturalist, than a journey in distant countries. It both sharpens, and partly allays that want and craving". The book's index is cross referenced in the text itself in boldface type. It is hoped this will allow quick reference for those using this edition as a reference guide.

It took Charles Darwin more than twenty years to publish this book, in part because he realized that it would ignite a firestorm of controversy. On the Origin of Species first appeared in 1859, and it remains a continuing source of conflict to this day. Even among those who reject its ideas, however, the work's impact is undeniable. In science, philosophy, and theology, this is a book that changed the world. In addition to its status as the focus of a dramatic turning point in scientific thought, On the Origin of Species stands as a remarkably readable study. Carefully reasoned and well-documented in its arguments, the work offers coherent views of natural selection, adaptation, the struggle for existence, survival of the fittest, and other concepts that form the foundation of modern evolutionary theory.

Voyage of the Beagle chronicles Charles Darwin's five years as a naturalist on board the H. M. S. Beagle. The notes and observations that he recorded in his diary included Chile, Argentina and Galapagos Islands and encompasses the ecology, geology and anthropology of the places he visits. A fascinating travel memoir the ideas that were later to evolve into Darwin's theory of natural selection find their naissance in Voyage of the Beagle.

In this 1880 book, written with his son Francis, Darwin makes the pioneering attempt to connect plant movements with the larger scheme of biological behavior. Not well received at the time, it has proven to be an enduring influence on plant movement research: he was talking about Phototropism, that plants grow towards a light source.

In The Descent of Man Darwin addresses many of the issues raised by his notorious Origin of Species: finding in the traits and instincts of animals the origins of the mental abilities of humans, of language, of our social structures and our moral capacities, he attempts to show that there is no clear dividing line between animals and humans. Most importantly, he accounts for what Victorians called the 'races' of mankind by means of what he calls sexual selection. This book presents a full explanation of Darwin's ideas about sexual selection, including his belief that many important characteristics of human beings and animals have emerged in response to competition for mates.

In this 1875 publication, Darwin details the multitude of experiments he conducted, along with many friends, colleagues, and his sons, on carnivorous plants with a special focus on the feeding mechanisms and the adaptations that enabled the plants to survive. This study of feeding flies to plants includes illustrations from Darwin and his sons.
