Strictly speaking, there were only six Poor Travellers; but, being a Traveller myself, though an idle one, and being withal as poor as I hope to be, I brought the number up to seven. This word of explanation is due at once, for what says the inscription over the quaint old door? RICHARD WATTS, Esq. by his Will, dated 22 Aug. 1579, founded this Charity for Six poor Travellers, who not being ROGUES, or PROCTORS, May receive gratis for one Night, Lodging, Entertainment, and Fourpence each. It was in the ancient little city of Rochester in Kent, of all the good days in the year upon a Christmas-eve, that I stood reading this inscription over the quaint old door in question. I had been wandering about the neighbouring Cathedral, and had seen the tomb of Richard Watts, with the effigy of worthy Master Richard starting out of it like a ship's figure-head; and I had felt that I could do no less, as I gave the Verger his fee, than inquire the way to Watts's Charity. The way being very short and very plain, I had come prosperously to the inscription and the quaint old door.

A Tale of Two Cities (1859) is a novel by Charles Dickens, set in London and Paris before and during the French Revolution. The novel depicts the plight of the French peasantry demoralized by the French aristocracy in the years leading up to the revolution, the corresponding brutality demonstrated by the revolutionaries toward the former aristocrats in the early years of the revolution, and many unflattering social parallels with life in London during the same period.

Humphrey's Clock (Master Humphrey's Clock) is a weekly paper entirely written by Charles Dickens and published from April 4, 1840 to April 4, 1841. First presented with a story-frame in which Master Humphrey recounts and evokes the circle of His friends, all zealous storytellers including The Pickwick Papers, soon added several news, then the novels The Store of Antiquities and Barnaby Rudge. Master Humphrey is a lonely Londoner of a certain age who likes to collect old manuscripts carefully kept in an old clock at the corner of the fireplace. One fine morning he decided to found a small circle named "The Clock of Master Humphrey," whose members would read all their manuscripts. In addition to Mr. Humphrey himself, there was Jack Redburn, a gentleman afflicted with deafness, Owen Miles, a retired merchant, and Mr. Pickwick, well known to the readers. In the kitchen is the club of servants, led by Sam Weller, the faithful servant of Mr. Pickwick, and who understands the good of Master Humphrey, the barber and, of course, Sam Weller in person. After The Old Curiosity Shop, Master Humphrey introduces Barnaby Rudge, then he is left to his thoughts by the corner of the fireplace. The deaf gentleman takes over; Later, he and his friends return to Humphrey's house where he finds him dead. He bequeathed money to the barber and maid, probably destined to unite by marriage. The deaf man and another friend take care of the house of the deceased and close the club.

Our Mutual Friend, written in the years 1864-65, is the last novel completed by Charles Dickens and is one of his most sophisticated works, combining psychological insight with social analysis. It centres on, in the words of critic J. Hillis Miller, "money, money, money, and what money can make of life." In the opening chapters a body is found in the Thames and identified as that of John Harmon, a young man recently returned to London to receive his inheritance. Were he alive, his father's will would require him to marry Bella Wilfer, a beautiful, mercenary girl whom he had never met. Instead, the money passes to the working-class Boffins, and the effects spread into various corners of London society. John Harmon - is heir to the Harmon estate, under the condition that he marry Bella Wilfer. He is presumed dead throughout most of the novel, though in fact he is living under the name John Rokesmith, and working as a secretary for the Boffins in an attempt to better get to know Bella, the Boffins, and people's general reaction to John Harmon's "death". Harmon also uses the alias Julius Handford upon first returning to London. Harmon's "death" and subsequent resurrection as Rokesmith/Handford is consistent with Dickens's recurring theme in the novel of rebirth from the water. 1] His upward social mobility through his own efforts is presented as favourable, in contrast with Headstone, Hexam, and the Lammles. Bella Wilfer - is born into poverty, but retains the hope of marrying into wealth and receiving the inheritance of Old Mr Harmon, until her intended husband, John Harmon, is (reportedly) killed, leaving her without future prospects. She learns of the trouble money can bring when taken in by the newly-rich Boffins. Bella rejects Rokesmith's proposal at first but later accepts. Initially described as a "mercenary young woman". Nicodemus (Noddy) Boffin, the Golden Dustman - becomes a member of the nouveaux-riches when Old Mr Harmon's heir is considered dead. He is illiterate, but wants very much to fit the image of a wealthy man, and so hires Silas Wegg to read to him in hopes of gaining more intelligence and worldliness. However, he is nearly blackmailed by Wegg. He assumes the role of a miser to show Bella the dangers of wealth, but eventually admits this behaviour was an act and gives his money to Bella and John. Boffin's innocence, na ve curiosity, and desire to learn contrast with his "elaborate performances as Boffin the miser". Critics speculate that Dickens's decision to have Boffin playing a part may not have been planned, as it was not very convincing for a man who has shown his simplistic ignorance on several occasions. Boffin's inheritance of old Harmon's money is appropriate because Harmon had attained it by combing the dust heaps, because this suggests social mobility. Boffin represents a wholesome contrast to such wealthy characters as the Veneerings and Podsnaps, and may have been based on Henry Dodd, a ploughboy who made his fortune removing London's rubbish............. Charles John Huffam Dickens (7 February 1812 - 9 June 1870) was an English writer and social critic. He created some of the world's best-known fictional characters and is regarded as the greatest novelist of the Victorian era. 1] His works enjoyed unprecedented popularity during his lifetime, and by the twentieth century critics and scholars had recognised him as a literary genius. His novels and short stories enjoy lasting popularity. Born in Portsmouth, Dickens left school to work in a factory when his father was incarcerated in a debtors' prison. Despite his lack of formal education, he edited a weekly journal for 20 years, wrote 15 novels, five novellas, hundreds of short stories and non-fiction articles, lectured and performed extensively, was an indefatigable letter writer, and campaigned vigorously for children's rights, education, and other social reforms....

The Holly-Tree takes place in an inn. A dejected lover believes his darling has been untrue with his best friend and, instead of talking to her about it, decides to run away to America. His plan is foiled by the weather and he gets snowed in at The Holly Tree Inn for Christmas. Dickens then turns this into some tales within a tale story. He retells the story of Sweeney Todd and some other suspense stories, but then comes to the heart of the matter. He tells of two even younger lovers that ran away to this inn in an attempt to get married.
