The Chimes: A Goblin Story of Some Bells that Rang an Old Year Out and a New Year In, a short novel by Charles Dickens, was written and published in 1844, one year after A Christmas Carol and one year before The Cricket on the Hearth. It is the second in his series of "Christmas books": five short books with strong social and moral messages that he published during the 1840s.

De avonturen van Oliver Twist is de titel en de naam van het hoofdpersonage van n van de bekendste romans van de Britse schrijver Charles Dickens, gepubliceerd in 1838. Het boek verscheen aanvankelijk in afzonderlijke delen, die van februari 1837 tot april 1839 werden gepubliceerd. Oliver Twist was vooral bedoeld als protest van Dickens tegen de wantoestanden in de victoriaanse samenleving. Kinderarbeid in de zogenaamde Work Houses (armenhuizen) en de onderwereld waarin straatkinderen tot crimineel worden opgeleid spelen in het boek een grote rol. De hoofdpersoon, Oliver Twist, is een weesjongen door wiens ogen we het harde leven in Londen rond 1830 bekijken. Het boek werd meermaals verfilmd, ook voor televisie, en er verschenen verschillende Nederlandse vertalingen van. De Engelstalige musical Oliver werd een groot succes, evenals verschillende hertalingen. Er bestaat ook een achter-de-schermendocumentaire van de Nederlandstalige versie, Oliver: Achter de schermen. Charles John Huffam Dickens (Landport bij Portsmouth, 7 februari 1812 - Gad's Hill Place in Rochester (Kent), 9 juni 1870) was n van de belangrijkste Engelse schrijvers tijdens het Victoriaans tijdperk en de eerste literaire chroniqueur van de grootstad middenin de industri le revolutie. Tot na de Eerste Wereldoorlog bleef hij Engelands populairste schrijver. Hij verwierf bekendheid met The Pickwick Papers (The posthumous papers of the Pickwick Club) dat vanaf 1836 maandelijks verscheen. Daarna verschenen Oliver Twist in het door hem geredigeerde tijdschrift Bentley's Miscellany in 1837-1838, Nicholas Nickleby in 1838-1839, The Old Curiosity Shop en Barnaby Rudge beiden in 1841. Zijn beroemdste romans zijn David Copperfield (1849-1850, deels autobiografisch), Great Expectations (1860-1861), Oliver Twist en Nicholas Nickleby.

The Detective Police is a classic short mystery story by Charles Dickens. WE are not by any means devout believers in the old Bow Street Police. To say the truth, we think there was a vast amount of humbug about those worthies. Apart from many of them being men of very indifferent character, and far too much in the habit of consorting with thieves and the like, they never lost a public occasion of jobbing and trading in mystery and making the most of themselves.
