When millions suffer under iron-fisted oppression, when anger and resentment boil into bloody rebellion, when triumph leads to savage vengeance—does one individual life matter? In A Tale of Two Cities, Charles Dickens interweaves the intensely personal dramas of Lucie Manette, Charles Darnay, and Sydney Carton with the terror and chaos of the French Revolution. The result is a powerful story of love, sacrifice, and redemption amid horrific violence and world-changing events.

LARGE PRINT EDITION. Having secured its place in history as one of the best-selling novels of all time, A Tale of Two Cities remains at the very center of important Victorian Era Literature. It follows the story of a French Doctor who has just been released from an 18-year-long imprisonment in the Bastille. Doctor Manette flees Paris to join the daughter he’s never met now living in London. Struggling to survive during the French Revolution and what became known as the Reign of Terror, Doctor Manette does all he can to avoid the guillotine while finding himself enmeshed in the dramas that have ensued around his daughter, Lucy Manette. The novel portrays what life was like before and during France and London’s most trying political times. Charles Dickens writes profoundly on the struggle of the French peasantry, recounting their strife and fight against the aristocracy and the looming and ever potent wealth of the upper class. Paralleling the angst and animosity happening in London at the same time, Dickens illustrates the challenging circumstances facing both countries, weaving together a narrative that has inspired, petrified, and brought solace to readers over the course of the book’s history. With the undercurrent of political transformation, A Tale of Two Cities creates hope and the possibility of a new life in a time where such wishes were simply unimaginable.

Dickens had already achieved renown with The Pickwick Papers. With Oliver Twist his reputation was enhanced and strengthened. The novel contains many classic Dickensian themes - grinding poverty, desperation, fear, temptation and the eventual triumph of good in the face of great adversity. Oliver Twist features some of the author's most enduring characters, such as Oliver himself (who dares to ask for more), the tyrannical Bumble, the diabolical Fagin, the menacing Bill Sikes, Nancy and 'the Artful Dodger'. For any reader wishing to delve into the works of the great Victorian literary colossus, Oliver Twist is, without doubt, an essential title.

Bleak Housecharles dickensBleak House is a novel by English author Charles Dickens, first published as a serial between March 1852 and September 1853. The novel has many characters and several sub-plots, and the story is told partly by the novel's heroine, Esther Summerson, and partly by an omniscient narrator. At the centre of Bleak House is a long-running legal case, Jarndyce and Jarndyce, which came about because someone wrote several conflicting wills. Dickens uses this case to satirise the English judicial system. Though the legal profession criticised Dickens' satire as exaggerated, this novel helped support a judicial reform movement, which culminated in the enactment of legal reform in the 1870s. There is some debate among scholars as to when Bleak House is set. The English legal historian Sir William Holdsworth sets the action in 1827 however, reference to preparation for the building of a railway in Chapter LV suggests the 1830s.about the novel At the centre of Bleak House is the long-running legal case, Jarndyce and Jarndyce, inspired by a real-life Chancery case, which came about because someone wrote several conflicting wills, which than led to numerous family feuds, schemes and murder. Charles Dickens (1812-1870) was an English writer and social critic. He created some of the world's best-known fictional characters and is regarded as the greatest novelist of the Victorian era.

Charles Dickens, with his customary lyrical elegance, describes a place in industrial bloom and gives us insights into the lives of the people responsible for the building and developing of this manufacturing miracle in a beautiful corner of Worcestershire. For over 300 years, the needle has been developed and exported from Redditch and surrounding areas. At its height, 90% of all the world's needles came from this one corner of the world. Such was its global renown, that it drew the attention of Charles Dickens, who wrote about the needle production process and about the town following his visits in both 1843 and 1852. Charles Dickens considered knowledge sharing important and used 'The Penny Magazine of the Society for the Diffusion of Useful Knowledge' and later the 'Household Word' to achieve just that Dickens painted Redditch as a forward thinking cosmopolitan town, the book goes on to consider the changes that have impacted on the town before and since. This book is invaluable for those interested in the social history of the mid-nineteenth century, or indeed the needle manufacture processes. Dickens on the Ditch scrutinises Charles Dickens' observations and considers and compares the environment of his findings with facts and publications circulating at the time. It also offers numerous directions that studies might take from this fascinating part of Redditch's history from the only working water powered scouring mill left in the world, to its future and forward planning which can be seen in the only cloverleaf interchange road system in England. This town has touched all the world with its products and it has a global story to tell about its journey to the 21st century.. and one of the most famous authors in our history considered it worthy of scrutiny and merit and return visits The book has six parts and is littered with dozens of illustrations: The introduction: Explains how YOU are connected to the town. Then serves you: Charles Dickens' first writings on RedditchFollowed by: Overview & needle-pointers defend their reputationThen we read: Charles Dickens' second visit & writings on RedditchConsider: Reflections and ruminations on Dicken's visitConclude with: Redditch then and now Many of Charles Dickens' characters were based on real people and their lives. In his writings on Redditch he observed young children cutting, printing and pasting labels onto needle packets and you can't help but recall that he himself once worked sticking labels to jars. It is apparent through all his activities that he fought to better the lot of the working classes. Dickens describes some boys looking as if "they'd rather be playing marbles or at 'hop-scotch'" and that they would be "as fond of fun as any other boys". I think we hear his understanding and where his sympathies lie in these words. So with this work you can take a direct look into what, almost undoubtably, formed part of Dicken's research and learn so much about the times he was trying to represent and open the population's eyes to.. ..and learn a great deal about a truly 'remarkable' town.
