American author Charles Fort wrote a nonfiction book titled The Book of the Damned (first edition 1919). The book is regarded as the first on the subject of anomalistic and deals with a variety of anomalous phenomena, such as UFOs, strange organic and inorganic material falls from the sky, strange weather patterns, the potential existence of mythical creatures, human disappearances, and many other phenomena. Nearly a century after Charles Fort's Book of the Damned was first published, the strange phenomena described in this book remain largely unexplained by contemporary science. These phenomena include time travel, UFOs, mysterious planets, stigmata, rock-throwing poltergeists, enormous footprints, and bizarre rains of fish and frogs. Fort grabs the imagination while disproving widely accepted scientific theories through meticulous investigation and a funny, sardonic writing style. Because he was an ardent collector, almost all of his information was assembled from reports that were published in credible journals, newspapers, and magazines. Being a bit of a loner, Charles Fort spent much of his free time studying these bizarre incidents and gathering these accounts from periodicals given to him from all over the world.

The Book of the Damned was the first published nonfiction work by American author Charles Fort (first edition 1919). Concerning various types of anomalous phenomena including UFOs, strange falls of both organic and inorganic materials from the sky, odd weather patterns, the possible existence of creatures generally believed to be mythological, disappearances of people, and many other phenomena, the book is considered to be the first of the specific topic of anomalistics. The title of the book referred to what he termed the "damned" data - data that had been damned, or excluded, by modern science because of their not conforming to accepted belief. Fort charged that mainstream scientists are conformists who believe in what is accepted and popular, and never really search for truth that may be contrary to what they believe. He also compared the close-mindedness of many scientists to that of religious fundamentalists, implying that the supposed "battle" between science and religion is just a distraction for the fact that, science, in his opinion is in essence simply a de facto religion. This is a theme that Fort developed more in his later works, New Lands and Lo , particularly. Fort was one of the first major writers to deal extensively with paranormal phenomena. (wikipedia.org)

Charles Fort's classic recording of unexplained, paranormal events and phenomena offer fascinating insights into bizarre occurrences the author felt had been unjustly damned from formal, scientific study. The title derives from the author's perception that the book's subjects were so stigmatized and excluded from ordinary scientific inquiry that they had become 'damned'. Perhaps permanently forbade for formal study, the oddities and unexplained events in this text were felt worthy of attention by the author, who eventually became an authority on anomalous phenomena. The topics in Fort's thesis include unexplained disappearances of large groups of people, frogs and fish suddenly raining from the sky, the possibility that mythical beasts such as giants exist, UFOs manifest as glowing and sometimes moving lights in the sky, and bizarre weather phenomena. Fort attributes credence to many of these oddities, and argues that science - by dismissing them - has become a religion in itself.
