Smith's Actual Survey of the Roads From London to Brighthelmstone, Through Ryegate, Crawley & Cuckfield, With a Branch to Worthing. Also From London to Worthing
The 18th century was a wealth of knowledge, exploration and rapidly growing technology and expanding record-keeping made possible by advances in the printing press. In its determination to preserve the century of revolution, Gale initiated a revolution of its own: digitization of epic proportions to preserve these invaluable works in the largest archive of its kind. Now for the first time these high-quality digital copies of original 18th century manuscripts are available in print, making them highly accessible to libraries, undergraduate students, and independent scholars. Delve into what it was like to live during the eighteenth century by reading the first-hand accounts of everyday people, including city dwellers and farmers, businessmen and bankers, artisans and merchants, artists and their patrons, politicians and their constituents. Original texts make the American, French, and Industrial revolutions vividly contemporary.++++The below data was compiled from various identification fields in the bibliographic record of this title. Making Sense of Project Realities

Making Sense of Project Realities

There is more than a touch of 'The Emperor's New Clothes' in the way many organizations approach project management and the consequences are all too clear: project methodology inappropriately applied; little or no consideration of complexity or ambiguity; alienation of the stakeholders and a statistically poor record of performance for major business or infrastructure projects. Charles Smith's groundbreaking book Making Sense of Project Realities offers convincing explanations as to why project management theory and practice have become disconnected and describes the kind of complex, human skills that are required to deliver successful projects. The text draws heavily on the experiences of practising project and programme managers from across private and public sector organizations, many of whose stories were shared and analysed during the two-year research network 'Rethinking Project Management', which brought together thought leaders on project management from consultancy, industry and academia. The result is a highly readable, very credible and imaginative exploration of the nature of projects and programmes that will strike a chord with every project practitioner; a book that offers a realistic set of ideas for developing creative and effective project players, who understand the purpose of what they are doing, the context within which they are working, and the people with whom they need to engage. Update: Several MBA Courses use this book and the tutor feedback is encouragingly positive, including: "can be used from day one to change the mindset of the students concerning projects and their management."

Since the turn of the twenty-first century, Canadian unions have scored a number of important Supreme Court victories, securing constitutional rights to picket, bargain collectively, and strike. But how did the labour movement, historically hostile to judicial intervention in labour relations, come to embrace legal activism as a first line of defense as opposed to a last resort? Unions in Court documents the evolution of the Canadian labour movement's engagement with the Charter, demonstrating how and why labour has adopted a controversial, Charter-based legal strategy to challenge and change legislation that restricts union rights. This book's in-depth examination of constitutional labour rights will have critical implications for labour movements as well as activists in other fields.

I cannot live like this forever. Someday, everything will end and I will have no reason to exist. My eyes have seen every place, every form, every dimension. My purpose is constant and eternal. Or so I thought. There is a way out for me and I have found it. In her. It was said long ago, before I was created, that death will come from above. I must save myself from this torment that I know is coming when this all ends. When the skies of madness return.

Regarded as one of the most outstanding commanding officers on the Western Front, Wilfrid Abel Smith commanded an elite unit of 1,000 of the finest soldiers in the British Army. Educated at Eton and Sandhurst, Smith was a career soldier who led his battalion of Grenadiers with distinction through the First Battle of Ypres and the winter trench warfare of 1914–15. He died of wounds received at the Battle of Festubert in May 1915. The letters and diaries provide a vivid, first-hand account of the fighting and suffering on the front line, written by a compassionate commander and affectionate family man. Most of his brother officers were Old Etonians, including his brigade commander, Lord Cavan, and his second-in-command, George ‘Ma’ Jeffreys. Smith’s account offers a poignant insight into the way in which the privileged world of a Guards officer responded, with the highest sense of duty and courage, to the unprecedented demands of industrial warfare. From Eton to Ypres is edited by his great-grandson, Charles Abel Smith.

My art came to me in 1970. Why it did...that's the part I can't figure out. It just popped up. When I was at Junior 5, an art teacher showed me how to do stars and that was that, but by the time I was 19 and trying to learn to read, I started scribbling and scrabbling. I learned to draw just by doing it.

Playing the Project Manager is written for practising managers, to help them understand their performances as managers, and how they may advance their capabilities and their careers. Discover how managers acquire their authority, their power to deal with challenging situations, to speak out, and to lead the way forward. Learn what it takes to appear as a credible and coherent player on the project stage, and how to perform the archetypes - six standard modes for playing the project manager. The understandings revealed are founded on stories related by managers, telling us what real people actually do in difficult project situations, and are exemplified throughout using examples from those stories." Playing the Project Manager is a rare example of serious inquiry into the actions and behaviour of project managers. Charles Smith draws on the lived experiences of competent project managers to show how they adopt different identities when 'performing on the project stage' and how this permeates their management style and approach. In contrast to the technical rationality of most project management books, this book offers a refreshing window into the professional artistry of effective project managers and offers valuable guidance on the different ways in which the project manager role can be performed." Dr Mark Winter, Senior Lecturer in Management Practice, Manchester Business School. Reviewers say: "This is an interesting and highly entertaining book, by a very experienced researcher into the psychology of project management." David Pells, Editor, PM World Journal." I really love this book. It's not often that a gem of a book on project management comes along and this one is definitely one of those. ... It has managed to nail the subject of what is really happening when a project manager chooses to manage a project ... should be a compulsory companion book to any project management training course ..."
