Herland author Charlotte Perkins Gilman's captivating masterpiece takes readers to a hidden utopia where gender roles have been redefined, a secret society where women reign supreme. In this Feminist Utopian novel, Gilman's compelling narrative is told from the perspective of Van Jennings, a sociology student who forms an expedition party. He travels with two friends, Terry and Jeff, to explore an area of uncharted land. These fearless adventurers travel to a land rumored to be home to a society consisting only of women. They enter a world beyond imagination, an isolated land untouched by the influence of men. Within this harmonious civilization, where community is essential to the all-female society, bonds of sisterhood unite its inhabitants. The society is built on cooperation, respect, and intellectual prowess. It is a land where education is paramount. War, greed, and inequality do not exist. Women bear children without men and every individual is valued for their unique contributions. The women maintain their individuality while working with others within the community to reach a consensus. The three explorers grapple with their ingrained beliefs and preconceived notions of their own male dominated society. In this poignant social critique of the early 20th century, readers are immersed in a vision of what society could be when limitations are not imposed on women. Gilman's vivid storytelling stimulates the imagination and leaves an indelible mark on the reader's mind. Her eloquence and insight captivating and will leave you with a renewed sense of hope and possibility.

Three male explorers set out to reach a legendary land where only women live, and find-to their surprise-that the legends are true. This country hidden in the mountains is a feminist utopia. There are no men, nor is there war, poverty, or crime. The residents subsist on food from cultivated forests, maintain immaculate houses and roads, and reproduce asexually through parthenogenesis. Although the main characters are men, their role is to show us how their notions about society and womanhood are humorously upturned. Charlotte Perkins Gilman was an outspoken activist and suffragist, most famous nowadays for her short story "The Yellow Wallpaper." As a writer, she was stunningly prolific. She founded The Forerunner, a monthly magazine for which she personally wrote every article, story, and poem. Because she chose to run no advertisements, she covered the cost of printing the magazine herself. In contrast to many women's publications of the day, Gilman advocated for equal rights and expanded social roles for women. Originally published serially in The Forerunner in 1915, Herland was not republished as a standalone work until decades later. It is the second in Gilman's Utopian trilogy, along with Moving the Mountain and With Her in Ourland.

The first collection of lectures and sermons that Charlotte Perkins Gilman delivered in the first four years of her career The last decades have seen a resurgence of interest in Charlotte Perkins Gilman, now considered among the most important thinkers in US history. She is best known for fiction—such as the classic short story “The Yellow Wall-Paper” (1892)—and nonfiction, including her manifesto Women and Economics (1898), a work of intersectional sociology avant la lettre. Nevertheless, as a young writer, Gilman made her living delivering lectures. One cannot know Gilman without some knowledge of this body of lectures; this book fills that critical gap in Gilman scholarship. Since the recovery of Charlotte Perkins Gilman began in the late 1960s and continued with the republication of “The Yellow Wall-Paper” in the 1970s, her image in cultural memory has been increasingly celebrated. Andrew J. Ball presents here fifty previously unpublished texts. They trace the development of Gilman’s thoughts on diverse subjects like gender, education, labor, science, theology, and politics—forming an intellectual diary of her growth. These lectures are not just a testament to Gilman’s personal evolution, but also a crucial contribution to the foundations of American sociology and philosophy. The Essential Lectures of Charlotte Perkins Gilman, 1890–1894 marks a historic moment, unveiling the hidden genius of Gilman's oratory legacy.
