This illustrated, one-of-a-kind guidebook describes more than 450 lighthouses, detailing their history and architecture and providing full information on visiting or viewing them. Included are many "endangered" lights, threatened by erosion or lack of funding, and "ghost lights," which are no longer standing.

What was it like to live and work at a lighthouse during the heyday of shipping and fishing? How did lighthouse keepers and their families stationed on remote islands while away the long, cold, lonely hours between trips to the mainland for food and supplies? Here you'll find a record of the charming memories and stories of America's lighthouse keepers, including descriptions of daily life at a lighthouse.

This is the complete story of the lighthouse at Cape Hatteras, which for almost two hundred years has guided mariners through the treacherous waters off North Carolina's easternmost point.
