Named one of Elle Decor’s Best Coffee Table Books to Gift in 2022A tastemaking couple shares their playbook for creating a home that’s both beautiful and comfortable Chris Mitchell and Pilar Guzmán are design obsessives who both want the same thing: rooms that are spare yet warm, layered yet clean, current yet timeless. Rooms that never forget the real humans—with all their needs, hopes, emotions, aspirations, and even spills—who live in these spaces. Over the course of six ever more ambitious home renovations, they’ve cracked the code on how to achieve this. It’s a simple formula, one that lies in mixing modern design with timeworn materials—in particular, white oak, brass, and bridle leather, all three of which become richer, mellower, and burnished with patina as they age. Add a few essential lessons (Decorating by Mood, Borrowing from the Best) and a nine-point manifesto that covers everything from lighting (rooms should feel like lanterns at night), to the use of black as an accent, to the intention that every space should serve multiple purposes, and the result is Patina Modern, a uniquely inspiring and practical design guide. The book leads by example, as the authors reveal in room-by-room detail the full evolution of their homes, including a Brooklyn brownstone and two classic Hamptons “cottages.” Along the way, we come to not only understand just how they see and think but also learn what they’ve learned, getting an education in color, proportion, paint, and the world of modern furniture design, for which the authors have a special passion. Tools, principles, and the power of designing around the things you love—this is the gift of Patina Modern, showing just how to put it all together to create your own beautiful spaces.
Two lovers - Mitch and A. J. - find themselves torn apart by the winds of World War II. What keeps their love alive? Dearest A. J. tells the story of secret letters locked in A. J.'s heart and hidden for more than fifty years. They held the aroma of romance, the sounds of war, and the pain of parting. Who knew A. J. kept these treasures of her heart after all these years? It also chronicles Mitch's war as part of "The Greatest Generation," who defeated the tyrant of their age. From the frontlines of Mitch's service through North Africa, Sicily, and Italy, his letters tie their hearts together across an ocean and through a war. Dearest A. J. takes you back to a simpler time free of social media, iPhones, and everywhere communication. A time when men and women put pen to paper and wrote tender words, passionate words marinated in the heart over days, weeks, and even months.
It Doesn't Define Me: How I Rebuilt My Life After Surviving an Ischemic Stroke to My Spinal Cord

After surviving an ischemic stroke to his spinal cord that robbed him of his independence, Chris embarked on the battle of a lifetime - the fight to get his life back and show the world there is more to a person than a disability. Chris felt his feet, still in surgical stockings, touch the floor the first time he tried to stand after undergoing cardiac surgery. Instead of standing beside his gurney, Chris immediately fell to his knees onto the cold, hard linoleum floor in the CVICU. In the coming days Chris discovered that he could no longer run, walk or even stand and he was unable to feed himself, dress himself or even turn himself in his hospital bed. Learning that some damage had occurred to his spinal cord, the future Chris had planned for himself and his fianc e had been turned upside down. Instead of envisioning living the rest of their lives together, Chris feared that he would never be able to return home and if he did, his fianc e would be forced into the role of his 24-hour in-home care provider. Chris realized that he was in the fight of his lifetime, he knew he must draw upon his past experiences, and fight harder than he ever fought before, to get his life back. Determined to give himself and his fianc e their "happily ever after," Chris battled fear, setbacks and a blood clot that could have killed him as he fought not only to get his life back for himself and his fianc e, but to show the world there was more to him than his disability
The start of a new school year for Lizzy, TC and the Brain quickly turns from hopes of new friendships to fears of being bullied. Three redheaded friends: Lizzy the risk-taker and a tomboy, TC a kid with ADHD who struggles in the classroom, but who lives for baseball and their friend the Brain, the quiet whiz kid who can fix almost anything electronic and loves to investigate everything, have grown up together since Lizzy dug a hole and crawled into the brain's backyard at the age of three, are about to start a new school year attending the same school for the first time in three yearsThe brain just wanted to be editor of the school newspaper. TC just wanted his teachers to like him enough to give him good grades so his Dad will let him play baseball next summer. All Lizzy wanted was to make new friends at Lyons North Middle school. But before the last bell rang on the first day of school, the trio were being bullied for being redheads and for their Christian faith. The bullying seemed to increase every hour of the school day and with each encounter with a bully, the bullying became worse and more dangerous. After Lizzy was stuffed inside her locker, the trio are forced to take matters into their own hands and take on the bullies. A clue left behind in Lizzy's locker leads to the trio to discover that their bullying problem was about more than their Christian faith or their freckles and red hair, and that someone else may be involved. When they solve the mystery, they take the bully's own words and use them to strengthen their friendship and their own self-confidence.
As editor-in-chief of The Australian Chris Mitchell ran the largest stable of journalists with the largest editorial budget in the country for over a dozen years. In this humorous and revealing book he gives first hand details about the quirks and foibles of some of the most powerful politicians and media executives this country has produced. A controversial figure in media throughout his quarter of a century as a daily editor, Chris Mitchell still maintains close regular contact with past prime ministers, editors and media CEOs. His book is informed by the sorts of judgements and thought processes that govern daily newspaper journalism at the highest level and the battles his papers fought to publish tough stories about the rich and the powerful.

Voldelige islamske fraksjoner søker kontroll over nabostater - og samtidig omvender rekordmange muslimer seg til kristen tro. Based on his own life experiences, travels and meditations, Chris Mitchell reflects on how mindfulness practice can help people with Asperger's Syndrome (AS) with daily challenges including negative thought patterns, emotional and sensory issues, and navigating the social world. This practical handbook provides advice and instruction on adopting a mindful way of living to help tune in to the present moment and each chapter provides step-by-step mindfulness exercises that allow individuals with AS to overcome obstacles through awareness. Included are breathing exercises, simple yoga stretches, sitting, standing and walking meditations, visualisations, and easy ways to incorporate mindfulness techniques into everyday activities such as eating, brushing your teeth or doing the dishes. By teaching how to live mindfully moment to moment, this book gives people with Asperger's Syndrome the key to relieving stress, increasing awareness, and living a healthier and happier life.
Understanding who you are can be a lonely and difficult process following the diagnosis of Asperger's Syndrome (AS). Asperger's Syndrome and Mindfulness illuminates this experience as an empowering path of discovery through the teachings of Buddhism. Chris Mitchell draws parallels between the experience of his own journey towards personhood through AS and the spiritual tenants of Theravada Buddhism, as outlined through the Eightfold Path, a guideline to personal development. Worry and anxiety, confusing desires or negative thoughts are among the everyday hindrances a person with AS faces. This book takes the reader through the key beliefs of Theravada Buddhism, such as Mindfulness and the Four Noble Truths, showing how practices such as Insight Meditation can lead to a positive resolution of these feelings. Talking openly about his own personal experiences, Chris Mitchell provides helpful tips and suggestions for improving confidence and self-esteem towards an overall better sense of self that will be of interest to anyone diagnosed with AS or their family and friends.
`Chris Mitchell was 20 when he was diagnosed with Asperger syndrome. Both his academic success and the horrendous bullying he suffered highlight the mixed blessings of mainstream education for a child with Asperger syndrome. While his eventual success is heartwarming, from today's understanding of Asperger, the ignorance and hostility Mitchell faced throughout his early life are shocking' - TES Extra for Special Needs 'This autobiographical account of a young man's discovery that Asperger's syndrome could explain his early problems and provide light at the end of the tunnel, is both insightful and inspiring. Parents of children with Asperger's syndrome and also older "aspies" will profit from Chris's hard won experience' - Dyslexia Contact '[This] is a straightforward read, full of concrete examples of how Asperger's syndrome affects the individual but at the same time acknowledging that every individual is different. Having experienced first-hand the vulnerability of the adolescent with Asperger's syndrome, desperate to make connections with those around him but constantly being knocked back, I was delighted to read about the friendships [Chris Mitchell] eventually establishes when he takes the brave decision to make contacts through the web and sets out on his travels. I would particularly recommend this book to those with little knowledge of Asperger's syndrome, especially for anyone involved in helping those with a diagnosis of Asperger's syndrome through further education' - British Journal of Special Education `This book is a 'must-read' for any parents of children with Aspergers syndrome and also older aspies themselves. They will be able to relate to the slightly quirky writing style and profit from Chris's hard won experience. These children are so individualistic and often isolated from like minds, so the book will provide some solace that there are other people like them' - Judith Stansfield, Chair North Richmondshire Community Partnership SEN ICT Consultant NASEN ICT Group BDACC Reviews and Literature Editor `This book shows how one individual with very severe handicaps due to Asperger's Syndrome won through in the end and achieved despite such a poor beginning. This is a book which should be read by anyone who has been diagnosed with Asperger's Syndrome or feels he or she might have this condition' - Dr L F Lowenstein, National Association Gifted Children Newsletter 'This is an unusual book in that it is written by a man where most autobiographical books about autism are written by women. It is both very readable and well-written, with a detached an honest account of his childhood, family life and life prior to diagnosis. He gets on well with his family, and they are happy that he has written this book, and happy with the book, despite some implied criticism of how they brought him up. Indeed, it comes across as less aggressive than some accounts, so it is particularly insightful for parents and other empathotypicals who might find more black-and-white descriptions of their mistakes hurtful. As with every book written by someone on the spectrum that I have seen, it is a short book, giving a snapshot of his difficulties and joys before and also after his diagnosis, giving highlights of specific problems and pleasures. Overall I think it would be a good book for someone who recognises himself in the author, or as a starting point for deepening your understanding of your brother, son or friend, or, if you are already interested in this condition, to broaden your understanding of the ways that it present itself' - Asperger United '[A]n especially uplifting read for a young person or adult newly diagnosed with Asperger's Syndrom. It also would help those unfamiliar with Asperger's Syndrome to understand the condition much better' - REACH This gripping and at times astonishing story will be inspirational to all adults either facing Asperger's Syndrome personally or interacting with someone who has been diagnosed. In his own imitable style, Chris Mitchell describes his life before and after diagnosis with Asperger's Syndrome. We follow Chris through primary and secondary school, where his lack of social interaction and anger continually land him in trouble, and where he is bullied for being different. Only his excellent memory and specialist interests enable him to continue, and pass his GCSEs and a GNVQ in Media Studies. At university he is diagnosed with Asperger's Syndrome. Suddenly his life makes more sense, and his self-awareness means his self-confidence returns, resulting in world travel, a Masters qualification in Information and Library Management and finally, acceptance. Chris Mitchell is a Records Assistant at Durham County Record Office, and also does public speaking on the subject of Asperger's Syndrome.

This addition to the "Britain in Old Photographs" series brings together a collection of black-and-white pictures spanning the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Drawn from family albums, local collections and professional photographers, they show the way things were and how they have changed. Every photograph is captioned, providing names and dates where possible, revealing historical and anecdotal detail and giving life to the scenes and personalities captured through the camera lens. Bringing together all aspects of daily life - celebrations and disasters, work and leisure, people and buildings - the collection should inspire memories, as well as serve as an introduction to visitors.
