The junction of Highways 20 and 97 forms a rough right angle around which lies the city of Williams Lake. These are the co-ordinates by which Christian Petersen's fiction can be charted. From the building of the Gaol at Soda Creek to ruminations on the origins of the Barkerville fire, this book explores the unpredictable, romantic and spiritual qualities of life in rural BC. The harshness of the wild west permeates Petersen's second collection of short fiction. In the story "Horse from Persia", a condemned man contemplates the injustice of life at his hanging speech: "I wished mightily that I could climb up on that horse and escape the sorrowful puzzle my days had become. For if it's true time is a gift, mine was not altogether pleasant." But Petersen is just as comfortable extrapolating truths from present-day life, as in "Laketown Breakdown" where a young man struggles to stay on the right side of the law while coping with the death of his parents. And in the title story, "All Those Drawn to Me," Petersen creates a masterful blend, shifting from the gold rush to the contemporary with three motives, three lives and three battles with death on the treacherous waters of the Upper Quesnel River. Whether in the past or present, Petersen's characters explore romance, poverty and spiritual quandaries as they wander amid the landscape and back streets of the dusty little cities of BC's Central Interior.

Peter Ellis is a rookie probation officer in interior British Columbia when he gets saddled with a file that goes sideways. He's not in the best headspace to start with, since his marriage broke down last winter. Now it's the middle of summer, the rodeo's coming to town, and the one solid thing left in his life, his job, suddenly bucks him hard. Former NHL player Todd Nolin is Peter's new "client." Peter's job is all about risk management, and Nolin is a good bet to commit more mayhem. The victim is Todd's wife, Marina Faro, who has been badly beaten and feels her estranged husband is bent on killing her. Peter grapples with his need to keep Marina safe while maintaining a rein on his own attraction to her. There's no doubt that the local hockey hero is dangerous, but Marina's something of a puzzle herself. All Peter knows is he's drifting outside the line, and what lies beyond may be death.

In this ambitious book Christian Petersen has taken a central topic in economic and social history and given it a new sweep and coherence. As the Lord’s Prayer suggests, securing an adequate supply of bread was a matter of over-riding concern to everyone until very recently. Bread was always by far the largest single item in the budgets of the poor, but bread could be made from many grains - wheat, rye, barley etc. Christian Petersen describes how in the later eighteenth century the process of replacing other cereals by wheat in bread making was completed throughout Britain. He provides a continuous series of estimates of bread consumption per caput, of bread prices (and, consequently, used in conjunction with population data, of total national expenditure on bread), and of wheat output and net imports. The implications of the changes in techniques of milling and baking that occurred are analysed, and the organisation of the baking and retailing of bread is described. Bread was so central to the economy of individual households and to the national economy as a whole that this book represents a major contribution to the history of the British economy and of British society in the period 1770-1870.
