Clement, the Bishop of Rome, wrote his Letter to the Corinthians close to the end of the first century AD. The letter was highly respected in the early Church, and some Christians even included it among the canonical books of the New Testament. The work known as Second Clement is the earliest surviving Christian sermon outside of the New Testament. Although the work does not identify the author, the manuscripts that preserve the text identify it as written by the same Clement. Modern scholars date it to the first years of the second century AD. Both works, written originally in Greek, offer fascinating insights into the nature of the earliest Christian writings, at a time before the New Testament canon had been finalized. This edition provides a Tamil translation of both works.

a.d.30-100.] Clement was probably a Gentile and a Roman. He seems to have been at Philippi with St. Paul (a.d. 57) when that first-born of the Western churches was passing through great trials of faith. There, with holy women and others, he ministered to the apostle and to the saints. As this city was a Roman colony, we need not inquire how a Roman happened to be there. He was possibly in some public service, and it is not improbable that he had visited Corinth in those days. From the apostle, and his companion, St. Luke, he had no doubt learned the use of the Septuagint, in which his knowledge of the Greek tongue soon rendered him an adept. His copy of that version, however, does not always agree with the Received Text, as the reader will perceive.

The Epistles of Clement, Matheses, Polycarp, and Ignatius are included among the Apostolic Fathers. The authors were personally acquainted with the Apostles. Clement, Bishop of Rome was a disciple of Saint Peter. Ignatius was the second successor of St. Peter in the See of Antioch. An accepted tradition declares him a disciple of St. John. Polycarp was "instructed by Apostles", according to Irenaeus and had been a disciple of St. John nearly twenty years. These Epistles were written in the late first and early second century and provide great insight into early Christian thought.
