The "wicked and emotional" Fyodor Pavlovich Karamazov and his three sons-the impulsive and sensual Dmitri, the icy-cold Ivan, and the hale, red-cheeked young novice Alyosha-are featured in a series of triangular love encounters that explore erotic rivalry. Dostoevsky captures the entirety of Russian life-its social and spiritual striving-at what was at once the country's golden age and a sad turning point in its history-through the engrossing events of their story. Richard Pevear and Larissa Volokhonsky's prize-winning translation, which keeps the original's numerous voices, comedy, and startling modernity, stays true to the verbal ingenuity of Dostoevsky's prose. It is an accomplishment deserving of Dostoevsky's final and best book. The Russian Orthodox Church, the legal system, and even the author's most beloved causes and ideas are all presented in the work with a sense of irreverence, removing the opposition between orthodoxy and radicalism, rationality and crazy, love and hatred, and good and evil. It was "the allegory for the world's maturity, but with children to the fore," according to Rebecca West. The creativity of Dostoevsky is fully captured in this novel, especially in the way he uses the spoken word to encompass all forms of human expression.
Demons, also known as The Possessed or The Devils, is a dark masterpiece that evokes a world where the lines between and good and evil long ago became blurred. Pyotr Verkhovensky and Nikolai Stavrogin are the leaders of a Russian revolutionary cell. Their aim is to overthrow the Tsar, destroy society and seize power for themselves. Together they train terrorists who are willing to go to any lengths to achieve their goals - even if the mission means suicide. But when it seems their motley group is about to be discovered, will their recruits be willing to kill one of their own circle in order to cover their tracks? As the ensuing investigation and trial reveal the true identity of the murderer, Dostoyevsky's and everyone's faith in humanity is tested. Partly based on the real-life case of a student murdered by his fellow revolutionaries, Dostoyevsky's sprawling novel is a powerful and prophetic, yet lively and often comic depiction of nineteenth-century Russia, and a savage indictment of the madness and nihilism of those who use violence to serve their beliefs.

Fathers and Sons also translated more literally as Fathers and Children, is an 1862 novel by Ivan Turgenev, published in Moscow. It is one of the most acclaimed Russian novels of the 19th century. The novel is accompanied by a rich selection of Turgenev's letters that illustrate his involvement in the critical controversy that surrounded the publication of Fathers and Children.
"The Adolescent" is Fyodor Dostoyevsky's 1875 novel which tells the story of the life of a 19-year-old intellectual, Arkady Dolgoruky, and his conflict with his father. Arkady is the illegitimate child of the controversial and womanizing landowner Versilov and was raised by one of Versilov's serf, the pious Makar Dolgoruky. The novel's primary tension arises between Arkady and Versilov, when Arkady becomes an adult and joins Versilov's family in St. Petersburg. Arkady has been away at boarding school for many years and hardly knows this wealthy and dysfunctional family. As he comes to learn more about them, his dreams of an easy, wealthy life are tested and he becomes embroiled in the scandalous affairs of his father. Arkady rebels against his father's expectations and soon becomes entangled with social agitators and a mysterious young lady. Rich with the depictions of the complex psychological, emotional, and moral conflicts that plague the human condition and are so common to the characters of Dostoyevsky's work, "The Adolescent" is a classic and thought-provoking work by one of the world's greatest authors. This edition is printed on premium acid-free paper.

he Double centers on a government clerk who goes mad. It deals with the internal psychological struggle of its main character, Yakov Petrovich Golyadkin, who repeatedly encounters someone who is his exact double in appearance but confident, aggressive, and extroverted, characteristics that are the polar opposites to those of the toadying "pushover" protagonist. The motif of the novella is a doppelg nger (Russian "dvoynik"), known throughout the world in various guises such as the fetch.

Vladimir Petrovich Voldemar, a 16-year-old, is staying in the country with his family and meets Zinaida Alexandrovna Zasyekina, a beautiful 21-year-old woman, staying with her mother, Princess Zasyekina, in a wing of the manor. This family, as with many of the Russian minor nobility with royal ties of that time, were only afforded a degree of respectability because of their titles; the Zasyekins, in the case of this story, are a very poor family. The young Vladimir falls irretrievably in love with Zinaida, who has a set of several other (socially more eligible) suitors whom he joins in their difficult and often fruitless search for the young lady's favour.

Ivan Gontcharoff is best known for his second novel, Oblomov. One might say, only known, but, while his output was small, he did write two other novels, some short stories and some travel pieces. A Common Story was his first novel, published in 1847. It opens with its hero, Alexandr Fedoritch asleep. Its plot concerns his departure from the countryside to St Petersburg to pursue a bureaucratic career and his mother trying to prevent him, pointing out the superior qualities of the countryside. The title of the novel is a reference to the time-honoured psychological tension between son and mother. Many of the themes Gontcharoff developed more fully in Oblomov are first seen here.
Eisenstein's Battleship Potemkin, although made as Communist propaganda to celebrate the twentieth anniversary of the mutiny in 1905, is an undoubted film classic. One of its sources was Constantine Feldman's memoir which Faber Finds are reissuing one hundred years after Constance Garnett's translation was first published. Of course this isn't objective history but it is a vivid first-hand account of the unrest in Odessa and of the mutiny itself, the twelve days when the Potemkin flew the red flag of revolution and ruled the Black Sea. Feldman's memoir is a rare book that should be better known; it's scale is smaller but it stands comparison with John Reed's Ten Days that Shook the World, his eyewitness account of the 1917 Russian Revolution.
