Woodman's translation masterfully conveys Tacitus' distinctive and powerful literary style and reflects the best of relevant current scholarship. His introduction provides a wealth of insight into the period about which Tacitus wrote, Tacitus himself, and the principles of translation that have shaped this rendering. Includes extensive notes; political, military, and geographical appendices; imperial family trees; suggested further readings; maps; and index.

The first book of Tacitus' Annals is concerned with the reign of Tiberius and with Roman campaigns in Germany. Norma Miller's useful edition, first published in the Methuen Classics series (1959), then by Bradda Books, by Blackwell and finally by BCP (1992), remains one of the best approaches for students making their first acquaintance with the work of Tacitus. The generously full introduction has sections on the author and his work and the content of Book I; most useful for the tiro are the sections on Tacitus' individualities of style and of syntax. There is full annotation, aimed straightforwardly at basic comprehension of the text, and a vocabulary.

This book remains the standard edition of the Dialogus, providing a comprehensive treatment of the problems of authorship, date, form and style. This volume is intended to meet the needs of students and scholars increasingly working on ancient rhetoric, as the Dialogus constitutes an important link between the rhetorical works of Cicero on the one hand and Quintilian's Institutio Oratoriae on the other.

This companion to the Penguin translation of Tacitus' book XIV provides commentary on an important period of Roman history, the years 59-62 AD when Nero was freed (mainly by murder) from the restraints imposed by Agrippina, Burrus and Octavia. The commentary pays special attention to Tacitus' use of stylistic devices to emphasis important events and traits of personality.
