When Marigold Davis arrives in Denver City in the summer of 1859, she is not the mail order bride Virgil Gardner ordered. She’s a penniless divorcee who stole her ticket from her sister. Marigold refuses to be intimidated by the surly mountain man who greets her. Nor does she expect him to marry her because, honestly, she doesn’t want to marry him or anyone else. She proposes she mind his three children until she earns out the value of her fare, then she’ll start her life over. She plans to do it right this time. Virgil doesn’t trust the crafty Ms. Davis, but he’s out of options. He and his partners have finally struck gold in the remote valley of Quail’s Creek and they have to work their claim before the snow flies. An unmarried woman in a mining camp is a world of temptation, though, especially for him. He doesn’t particularly want to get hitched again, either, but if he doesn’t make her his wife, someone else might!
