Among the Crags of the Eyrie

Among the Crags of the Eyrie

Daniel Shapiro's Among the Crags of the Eyrie brings together several strands in the poet's oeuvre to date, namely, confessional poetry, poems relating to family and relationships, and ekphrastic verse. The poems in this new collection are constructed with remarkable precision, each a gift of music and form. They seek to ascend and descend, the way eagles do from their eyries, but also transcend, as suggested in the title poem. Others grouped in the book's four sections include a confession provoked by a fire, exploring its traumatic aftermath as well as its capacity for generating renewal; whimsical elegies honoring the poet's father and mother; and tender lyrics to lovers, even one to Brazilian "birdees." A long narrative piece, "The Thief with his Eyes," relates a story about a distant cousin who made his fortune in California, then lost it all. Among the book's additional offerings are an ode to an ostrich; a meditation on eggs, from chicken to chocolate to Faberg ; and poems reflecting on works by Tiffany, Rodin, Modigliani, and others, which celebrate art's transformative power.
Missing Persons, Animals, and Artists

Missing Persons, Animals, and Artists

Roberto Ransom; Daniel Shapiro

Elegant prose and imaginative ironies bring these compelling short stories to life in this first English-language collection from Mexican author Roberto Ransom. Each of the ten stories is filled with fascinating, yet enigmatic and sometimes elusive characters: an alligator in a bathtub, an invisible toad who appears only to a young boy, the beautiful redheaded daughter of a mushroom collector, a deceased journalist who communicates in code, and even Leonardo Da Vinci himself, meditating on The Last Supper. One of Mexico's most original writers, Ransom explores these characters' emotional depths as they move through their fantastical worlds that, while at times unfamiliar, offer brave and profound insights into our own. Missing Persons, Animals, and Artists is the follow-up to Ransom's highly acclaimed A Tale of Two Lions, praised by Ignacio Padilla as "the best Mexican literary work I have read in recent years...[It] heralds a pen capable of that rarest of privileges in our letters: attaining the comic and profoundly human through a perfect simplicity." This collection of short stories has been translated with great care by Daniel Shapiro.

"One of the most important books of our modern era" -Amb. Jaime de Bourbon For anyone struggling with conflict, this book can transform you. Negotiating the Nonnegotiable takes you on a journey into the heart and soul of conflict, providing unique insight into the emotional undercurrents that too often sweep us out to sea. With vivid stories of his closed-door sessions with warring political groups, disputing businesspeople, and families in crisis, Daniel Shapiro presents a universally applicable method to successfully navigate conflict. A deep, provocative book to reflect on and wrestle with, this book can change your life. Be warned This book is not a quick fix. Real change takes work. You will learn how to master five emotional dynamics that can sabotage conflict outside your awareness: 1. Vertigo How can you avoid getting emotionally consumed in conflict? 2. Repetition compulsion How can you stop repeating the same conflicts again and again? 3. Taboos How can you discuss sensitive issues at the heart of the conflict? 4. Assault on the sacred What should you do if your values feel threatened? 5. Identity politics What can you do if others use politics against you? In our era of discontent, this is just the book we need to resolve conflict in our own lives and in the world around us.
Is the Welfare State Justified?

Is the Welfare State Justified?

Daniel Shapiro

Cambridge University Press

sidottu
In this book, Daniel Shapiro argues that the dominant positions in contemporary political philosophy - egalitarianism, positive rights theory, communitarianism, and many forms of liberalism - should converge in a rejection of central welfare state institutions. He examines how major welfare institutions, such as government-financed and -administered retirement pensions, national health insurance, and programs for the needy, actually work. Comparing them to compulsory private insurance and private charities, Shapiro argues that the dominant perspectives in political philosophy mistakenly think that their principles support the welfare state. Instead, egalitarians, positive rights theorists, communitarians, and liberals have misunderstood the implications of their own principles, which in fact support more market-based or libertarian institutional conclusions than they may realize. Shapiro's book is unique in its combination of political philosophy with social science. Its focus is not limited to any particular country; rather it examines welfare states in affluent democracies and their market alternatives.
