Even after he achieved world-wide fame through books such as The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe and The Screwtape Letters, the Belfast-born author C. S. Lewis – often regarded as uncomplicatedly English by critics and the general public – proudly and regularly described himself as Irish. What’s more, he frequently incorporated Irish elements into his work. This includes, for example, numerous allusions to Irish mythology, the repeated employment of Hiberno-English and Ulster Scots words and expressions, and a preference for tropes frequently found in Irish (and sometimes specifically Ulster Protestant) writing.

This book discusses key works by important writers from Church of Ireland backgrounds (from Farquhar and Swift to Beckett and Bardwell), in order to demonstrate that writers from this Irish subculture have a unique socio-political viewpoint which is imperfectly understood. The Anglican Ascendancy was historically referred to as a “middle nation” between Ireland and Britain, and this book is an examination of the various ways in which Irish Anglican writers have signalled their Irish/British hybridity. “British” elements in their work are pointed out, but so are manifestations of their proud Irishness and what Elizabeth Bowen called her community’s “subtle … anti-Englishness.” Crucially, this book discusses several writers often excluded from the “truly” Irish canon, including (among others) Laurence Sterne, Elizabeth Griffith, and C. S. Lewis.

Bishop's Stortford was a small town in the Edwardian period. However, over 1,500 men and women from the town were on active service at some point during the First World War. Stortford had a munitions factory, many land girls, a VAD hospital, a POW camp and a very active Volunteer Corps. It also billeted over 20,000 troops, including at one point Albert Ball, flying ace. There are 208 names on the war memorial (but this is not the complete list of those who died). For every name on the memorial there are dozens who were affected by their lives and deaths.
