The Wireless World sets out a new research agenda for the history of international broadcasting, and for radio history more generally. It examines global and transnational histories of long-distance wireless broadcasting, combining perspectives from international history, media and cultural history, the history of technology, and sound studies. It is a co-written book, the result of more than five years of collaboration. Bringing together their knowledge of a wide range of different countries, languages, and archives, the co-authors show how broadcasters and states deployed international broadcasting as a tool of international communication and persuasion. They also demonstrate that by paying more attention to audiences, programmes, and soundscapes, historians of international broadcasting can make important contributions to wider debates in social and cultural history. Exploring the idea of a 'wireless world', a globe connected, both in imagination and reality, by radio, The Wireless World sheds new light on the transnational connections created by international broadcasting. Bringing together all periods of international broadcasting within a single analytical frame, including the pioneering days of wireless, the Second World War, the Cold War, and the decades since the fall of the Berlin Wall, the study reveals key continuities and transformations. It looks at how wireless was shaped by internationalist ideas about the use of broadcasting to promote world peace and understanding, at how empires used broadcasting to perpetuate colonialism, and at how anti-colonial movements harnessed radio as a weapon of decolonization.

This is the first biography of the much-loved seventies actor Richard Beckinsale, who died on 19 March 1979 at the age of thirty-one. It looks back at one of the biggest stars of that decade through the eyes of family, friends and colleagues. With his star rising steadily, he died of a heart attack, alone at home. Adored by the general public, his death was one of the most shocking losses to British comedy of the late seventies, and since then there has never been an actor with the same innocent charm as Richard Beckinsale. Nor did his popularity wane after his untimely death: repeats of the classic sitcoms Porridge and Rising Damp would keep his memory alive throughout the ensuing three decades. The Richard Beckinsale Story is an uplifting, but ultimately sad, tale of the life and death of a great talent. It is the compelling story of a man destined for greatness, but ultimately cut down in his prime.

Arguably one of Britain’s greatest and most versatile actors of the past 50 years, John Hurt was unique in so many ways. His body of work, both eclectic and often brilliant, saw him play characters that few others would attempt, let alone portray on a regular basis. From Quentin Crisp in the groundbreaking The Naked Civil Servant, to John Merrick in The Elephant Man, Hurt also gave stunning performances in classic films such as Midnight Express, Alien and 1984. But away from the cameras, he was a likeable but complicated character, haunted by shocking passages in his childhood and years of heavy drinking. His unmistakeable, gravelly voice hinted at high intelligence and also led to memorable voice parts in Watership Down and The Plague Dogs. John Hurt: The Elephant in the Room is the first deep examination of this much-loved actor’s life and work, published on the tenth anniversary of his death. Fascinating, sad and funny, John Hurt’s tale is of a life well lived, with more highs than lows that kept his legion of admirers captivated to the last.

The book provides readers with an accessible resource for understanding what sorts of AgeTech are available, what developments have been made and are currently underway, and what evidence exists for current technologies. The rapid pace of development in AgeTech, particularly in the commercial sphere, along with the competing claims being made for the benefits of many items, makes this practical guidebook essential for researchers and developers, policymakers, service providers and caregivers, and older adults themselves. While not intended to be exhaustive, this book covers basic information on common obstacles and barriers to technology development and adoption, things to keep in mind when using technology, and making the most of what is available to support older adults in staying connected.

Legendary British comic actor John Inman broke down many boundaries by playing the camp Mr Humphries in the long-running sitcom Are You Being Served? The show ran for thirteen years, had a spin-off movie and attracted millions of viewers in the UK. Inman’s character, whose innuendos were adored by viewers, invariably got the biggest laughs – and this at a time when being gay was largely frowned upon. Away from television, he soon became one of the most in-demand pantomime actors, making a small fortune over several decades. Yet it was as Mr Humphries that he was best loved and the reason he was regarded as a national treasure. In his private life, Inman was secretive about his sexuality until he married his long-term partner Ron Lynch in a civil ceremony in London in 2005. He died two years later following a long battle with hepatitis. Featuring revealing interviews with many of Inman’s surviving cast mates and colleagues, I’m Free! uncovers the full story of a man who was adored by millions and who broke down barriers by simply being himself.

Wilfrid Brambell was one of Britain’s most loved and complex character actors. Corbett. But despite scores of other successes in roles on stage, TV and film, Brambell died a sad and lonely man. Alongside fame and fortune, ‘You Dirty Old Man!’ reveals how Brambell suffered unbelievable personal heartache, battling an inner turmoil that eventually drove him to drink as his marriage collapsed in the most deceitful circumstances imaginable. His torment led to a secretive life off camera where he did everything possible to stay out of the public eye. It's a tally that beggars belief - 340 goals in a single season. Even more surprising is the fact few people can name the player behind that record-breaking feat. Paul Moulden was a schoolboy phenomenon. As star striker of the renowned Bolton Lads' Club, a 14-year-old Moulden smashed every goalscoring record as he netted 340 times in one incredible season - including 289 league goals in 39 matches. In doing so, he secured a place in The Guinness Book of Records. Coveted by Sir Alex Ferguson, Brian Clough and other top bosses and chased by every leading club in the land, Moulden chose his boyhood heroes, Manchester City, and looked to have the world at his feet. What happened next is hard to believe, as the grounded and hugely talented goalscorer suffered almost every major injury possible over the next decade. This is a story of extraordinary talent and broken dreams, told bluntly but without bitterness. Paul Moulden should have been a household name. This book might still make that happen.

Basil Rathbone is synonymous with Sherlock Holmes. He played the Victorian sleuth in the fourteen Fox/Universal films of the 1930s and ’40s, as well as on stage and radio. For many people, he is the Holmes. Basil Rathbone grew to hate Sherlock Holmes. The character placed restrictions on his career: before Holmes he was an esteemed theatre actor, appearing in Broadway plays such as The Captive and The Swan, the latter of which became his launchpad to greater stardom. But he never, ever escaped his most famous role. Basil Rathbone was not Sherlock Holmes. In The Curse of Sherlock Holmes, celebrated biographer David Clayton looks at the behind-the-camera life of a remarkable man who deserved so much more than to be relegated to just one role.
