"Patient X," the "Messiah" in the narrative, is found in an unnamed city in the middle of a war zone in the Middle East suffering from total amnesia. The first half of the book takes place there. But while X knows nothing about himself, he has clairvoyant powers to read minds and feel total empathy for anyone around him. Escaping from an army hospital where he witnesses torture, he meets Leila, a local photojournalist, who takes him in. They fall in love and marry. Leila is pregnant when X reads the mind of a would-be terrorist and prevents a suicide bombing at the city flower market. But chased by jihadists, he is struck by a truck and loses his recent memory including any idea of Leila and his life there. He awakens as Jacob, returns to his former life in San Francisco, starts a new business and begins to date Sara. A few chapters later, Leila finds him and gets a job as his secretary. She has lost their baby and wishes only to be near Jacob, who sadly does not recognize her. When Jacob and Sara become engaged, Leila is devastated and returns to her home. Slowly Jacob's memory and his powers of empathy and clairvoyance begin to come back. He breaks off with Sara and flies to the city where Leila lives not knowing yet who he's looking for.
An easy-to-read and highly visual “diameter of electrodes” approach to welding. Most textbooks do not cover smaller diameter electrodes well. Welding does. With over 50 years combined experience, the authors have created a book that is both reference-friendly and incredibly engaging to students and professionals alike. With setups for every important weld and step-by-step procedures and photos for every step, this is the only book on welding you will ever need. Welding provides readers with cleanly designed and concise chapters. Essential coverage of safety, theory, key skills, easy-to-read reference charts and tables, detailed step-by-step procedures, and a strong emphasis on the diameter of electrodes is covered in a simple, yet comprehensive way. After an introduction to welding and to welding safety, each major welding process is presented in its own chapter so they can easily be discussed in the classroom. Following the weld processes, chapters focus on critical topics such as codes, destructive and non-destructive weld testing, welding symbols, welding metallurgy, welding ferrous and nonferrous alloys, and welding power sources. The Second Edition has been updated to include a new chapter on pipe welding and techniques, a new macro look at metallurgy, and a more procedural approach to welding alloys. Welding codes and testing have also been split into two separate chapters, for accessibility and ease of use.

WINNER OF THE PULITZER PRIZE The first full account of how the Cold War arms race finally came to a close, this riveting narrative history sheds new light on the people who struggled to end this era of massive overkill, and examines the legacy of the nuclear, chemical, and biological weapons that remain a threat today. Drawing on memoirs, interviews in both Russia and the US, and classified documents from deep inside the Kremlin, David E. Hoffman examines the inner motives and secret decisions of each side and details the deadly stockpiles that remained unsecured as the Soviet Union collapsed. This is the fascinating story of how Reagan, Gorbachev, and a previously unheralded collection of scientists, soldiers, diplomats, and spies changed the course of history.

In his 13 years traveling and playing trumpet with the great Ray Charles, David Hoffman experienced many things, from the hilarious to the poignant, from heartwarming remembrances of his friends and musical colleagues, to the sublimely ridiculous difficulties of road life. Armed with a trumpet, a flugelhorn and a couple changes of clothes, Dave traveled the world with the notion that somewhere in these varied experiences there was a book to be written, not about Ray Charles particularly, but about the unusual life he led with the "cats in the band". Dave takes you around the Globe to regale you with tales of a world not seen by many, that of a traveling minstrel. "I never knew where I was going" Dave says, adding "and it really didn't matter" Whether in Paris or Pittsburgh, there was always a story to be told.
