It is surprising that scholars of Civil War memory have paid relatively little attention to the function of nostalgia within the Lost Cause movement created by white southern political, military, and civilian elites to explain Confederate defeat. This innovative study addresses this oversight by examining the emotional charge and political power of white southern nostalgia for an imagined past. This study also explores how counter-voices, black and white, articulated an alternative historical narrative to undermine the lost cause and its central themes in an era of growing racism and white supremacy. Taking as its thematic starting point the Confederacy’s defeat in 1865, the book builds on the idea that memories are produced out of historical experience by showing how their recall by individuals and groups plays an important role in the construction of the past. Using diaries, letters, reminiscences, magazines, fiction, and film, The Lost Cause of the Confederacy and American Civil War Memory illustrates how the Lost Cause shaped regional identity and distinctiveness in the decades following the Civil War as well as how critics confronted and challenged its rituals and rhetoric in cultural representations. As controversy over the removal of Confederate monuments has shown, disputes over the southern past, and how it should be remembered, still resonate today.

A pioneering neuroscientist offers a new way of understanding how emotions drive behavior Does your dog get sad when you leave for the day? Does your cat purr because she loves you? Do bears attack when they're angry? You can't very well ask them. In fact, scientists haven't been able to reach a consensus on whether animals even have emotions like humans do, let alone how to study them. Yet studies of animal emotion are critical for understanding human emotion and mental illness. In The Nature of the Beast, pioneering neuroscientist David J. Anderson describes a new approach to solving this problem. He and his colleagues have figured out how to study the brain activity of animals as they navigate real-life scenarios, like fleeing a predator or competing for a mate. His research has revolutionized what we know about animal fear and aggression. Here, he explains what studying emotions and related internal brain states in animals can teach us about human behavior, offering new insights into why isolation makes us more aggressive, how sex and violence connect, and whether there's a link between aggression and mental illness. Full of fascinating stories, The Nature of the Beast reconceptualizes how the brain regulates emotions-and explains why we have them at all.

The Kanban Maturity Model (KMM) is a new, powerful tool for coaches and consultants advising medium and large enterprises on transformation and improvement using the Kanban Method. From the author of the best-selling Kanban: Successful Evolutionary Change for your Technology Business, David J. Anderson, together with Teodora Bozheva, this book maps out seven levels of organizational maturity against the six general practices of Kanban to ensure appropriate application of Kanban practices and successful adoption of the approach. The KMM describes a roadmap and concrete actions that enable organizations to achieve fitness-for-purpose and exceptional business agility. This book is for consultants, coaches, corporate change agents, and managers who must lead medium- and large-scale enterprises through a transition to improve their operations and service delivery. This book is for businesses that aspire to superior business agility, to deliver fit-for-purpose products and services, to delight customers, and to provide the security of long-term survival associated with mature businesses that consistently meet or exceed customer expectations. The KMM is designed to eliminate the two most common failure modes in the adoption of Kanban: overreaching, causing an aborted start; false summit plateaus and failure to realize full benefit. KMM provides advisors with the knowledge to create just enough positive stress to provoke improvement without overdoing it and causing a regression in corporate performance. This book covers:

A new framework for the neuroscientific study of emotions in humans and animalsThe Neuroscience of Emotion presents a new framework for the neuroscientific study of emotion across species. Written by Ralph Adolphs and David J. Anderson, two leading authorities on the study of emotion, this accessible and original book recasts the discipline and demonstrates that in order to understand emotion, we need to examine its biological roots in humans and animals. Only through a comparative approach that encompasses work at the molecular, cellular, systems, and cognitive levels will we be able to comprehend what emotions do, how they evolved, how the brain shapes their development, and even how we might engineer them into robots in the future. Showing that emotions are ubiquitous across species and implemented in specific brain circuits, Adolphs and Anderson offer a broad foundation for thinking about emotions as evolved, functionally defined biological states. The authors discuss the techniques and findings from modern neuroscientific investigations of emotion and conclude with a survey of theories and future research directions. Featuring color illustrations throughout, The Neuroscience of Emotion synthesizes the latest in neuroscientific work to provide deeper insights into how emotions function in all of us.
