The Haunted Woman (1922) is a fantasy novel by David Lindsay. Following the commercial failure of his critically acclaimed novel A Voyage to Arcturus (1920), Lindsay hoped to achieve financial stability with a more conventional tale of suspense and the occult. Although he once more failed to reach a popular audience, Lindsay produced a powerful story of alternate worlds, the burden of convention, and the nature of human desire. “Never self-conscious, never embarrassed, always quiet and rather ennuyé, she fascinated by the very strength of her silence, which, it was abundantly clear, had nothing in common with stupidity. She had already declined three offers of marriage, before Marshall had appeared on her horizon.” Isbel Loment has always cherished her independence, never consenting to tie her fate to that of a man, especially not for love. Now engaged to successful underwriter Marshall Stokes, she finds herself nearing the end of the rootless lifestyle she has led since the age of sixteen, when the death of her father left her a ward of an eccentric aunt. While on vacation at an ancient estate in the hills of Sussex, Isbel discovers a mysterious staircase leading to three identical doors. Choosing one, she is transported to a mirror world where, though the details are lost upon leaving, she seems to be encountering her host Henry Judge. With a beautifully designed cover and professionally typeset manuscript, this edition of David Lindsay’s The Haunted Woman is a classic of British literature reimagined for modern readers.

Scottish novelist David Lindsay was born to a middle-class Calvinist family, forced by poverty to work as an insurance clerk instead of attending university, and at the age of forty took up the cause and worked his way to Corporal of the Royal Army Pay Corps in World War I. After the war he moved to Cornwall with his wife and began writing full-time, publishing his first novel, "A Voyage to Arcturus", in 1920. Although the science fiction novel initially sold less than six hundred copies, it has come to be known as a major "underground" novel of the 20th century, and heavily influenced C. S. Lewis's "Out of the Silent Planet". The story is set at Tormance, an imaginary planet orbiting Arcturus, where an adventurous Scot named Muskall has traveled following a s ance at an Observatory. While there he encounters myriad characters and lands which Lindsay employs as a critique of various philosophical systems. A fascinating combination of fantasy and philosophical reflection, "A Voyage to Arcturus" remains as a hugely influential novel for other writers of the genre ever since its initial publication. This edition is printed on premium acid-free paper.

David Lindsay - upea kirjailija! Matka Arcturukseen on mestariteos!” - Clive Barker”Luin Matkan Arcturukseen innolla - se kestää vertailun muihin teoksiin, se on sekä voimakkaampi että myyttisempi. [- -] Sitä ei voi lukea pelkkänä jännärinä.” - J. R. R. Tolkien”Yksi vuosisadan mahtavimmista kirjoista.” - Colin Wilson

Telling people about research is just as important as doing it. But many competent researchers are wary of scientific writing, despite its importance for sharpening scientific thinking, advancing their career, obtaining funding for their work and growing the prestige of their institution. This second edition of David Lindsay’s popular book Scientific Writing = Thinking in Words presents a way of thinking about writing that builds on the way good scientists think about research. The simple principles in this book will help you to clarify the objectives of your work and present your results with impact. Fully updated throughout, with practical examples of good and bad writing, an expanded chapter on writing for non-scientists and a new chapter on writing grant applications, this book makes communicating research easier and encourages researchers to write confidently. It is an ideal reference for researchers preparing journal articles, posters, conference presentations, reviews and popular articles; for students preparing theses; and for researchers whose first language is not English. FeaturesMakes it easy to understand what goes where in scientific publications and, equally importantly, whyReinforces principles with examples of good and bad writingAddresses new issues for publishing, including open access and predatory journalsEmphasises writing effectively in other media that scientists must use, including conference papers, posters, theses, reviews, popular articles and grant applicationsExplains the principles behind writing and how it affects readers rather than proposing recipes for good writing

Access to works in the public domain is an important source of human creativity and autonomy, whether in the arts, scientific research or online discourse. But what can users actually do with works without obtaining the permission of a copyright owner? Readers will be surprised to find how many different kinds of permitted usage exist around the world. This book offers a comprehensive international and comparative account of the copyright public domain. It identifies fifteen categories of public rights and gives a detailed legal explanation of each, showing how their implementation differs between jurisdictions. Through this analysis, the authors aim to restore balance to copyright policy debates, and to contribute to such debates by making practical law reform proposals. A major intervention in the field of intellectual property law and copyright, this book will appeal to lawyers, scholars and those involved in the administration of copyright law.

This book is a result of an effort made by us towards making a contribution to the preservation and repair of original classic literature. In an attempt to preserve, improve and recreate the original content, we have worked towards: 1. Type-setting & Reformatting: The complete work has been re-designed via professional layout, formatting and type-setting tools to re-create the same edition with rich typography, graphics, high quality images, and table elements, giving our readers the feel of holding a 'fresh and newly' reprinted and/or revised edition, as opposed to other scanned & printed (Optical Character Recognition - OCR) reproductions. 2. Correction of imperfections: As the work was re-created from the scratch, therefore, it was vetted to rectify certain conventional norms with regard to typographical mistakes, hyphenations, punctuations, blurred images, missing content/pages, and/or other related subject matters, upon our consideration. Every attempt was made to rectify the imperfections related to omitted constructs in the original edition via other references. However, a few of such imperfections which could not be rectified due to intentional\unintentional omission of content in the original edition, were inherited and preserved from the original work to maintain the authenticity and construct, relevant to the work. We believe that this work holds historical, cultural and/or intellectual importance in the literary works community, therefore despite the oddities, we accounted the work for print as a part of our continuing effort towards preservation of literary work and our contribution towards the development of the society as a whole, driven by our beliefs. We are grateful to our readers for putting their faith in us and accepting our imperfections with regard to preservation of the historical content. HAPPY READING

The Adventures of Monsieur de Mailly
France, 1700 -- an age of wit and sophistication, frippery and flattery, reputation and ridicule; an age of politics, romance, intrigue and the sword. Gaston de Mailly, ex-solider and down-at-heel gentleman, is living in a Paris that has little use for his skill with a blade. Fortunately, his wit is equally sharp. Allying himself to the sceptical lawyer Fleurus, Mailly offers to try his hand at any case that can't be pursued through the normal channels of the law. And so, in a series of adventures ranging from Mailly having to save himself from a reputation-destroying joke at the Court of the Sun King Louis XIV at Versailles, to fighting his way out, with both wits and sword, from the tangles of an assassination plot, Mailly puts his shoulder to the Wheel of Fortune in an age of rapid rise and fall, sudden danger and artful deception. In the rakish charm and misanthropic wit of his hero Gaston de Mailly, David Lindsay, author of the early-20th century classic A Voyage to Arcturus, found a way to cut loose from his more serious fiction and indulge in theatrical intrigue, witty adventure and the artful picaresque to a highly entertaining degree. But readers of Lindsay's work will still find his key themes here: the lone hero caught between conflicting powers in a deceptive world; the individual's struggle to retain integrity in a constrained yet superficial society; and the search for a lasting and genuine soul-mate -- all served with adventure and intrigue, wit and witticism, sword and poniard This edition includes annotations and explanatory notes.(The Adventures of Monsieur de Mailly was first published in the US as A Blade for Sale.)

Ingrid Fleming has always believed a goddess lies buried beneath the forbidding, Devil-headed rock-pile atop Devil's Tor. But when the pile is shattered in a sudden storm, it's her cousin, Hugh Drapier, who enters the newly-revealed tomb. Drapier has recently arrived from Tibet, where an encounter with the adventurer Henry Saltfleet and the archeologist Stephen Arsinal has left him in possession of a stolen sacred stone, the half of a broken whole, which has the power to induce visions of its arrival on Earth in the early days of primitive humanity. Arsinal believes the stone to be sacred to the Great Mother, and key to a prophecy that will unite a chosen man and woman, and bring about the birth of a new saviour. He and Saltfleet return to England on Drapier's trail, and arrive in Dartmoor just as the machinery of a thousands-year-long supernatural fate begins its final turn... A troubled, troubling, ambitious and difficult work that David Lindsay himself called his "monster," Devil's Tor answers the imaginative pyrotechnics of Lindsay's first novel, A Voyage to Arcturus, with a sustained maturity of insight into the intensely-felt and deeply-examined inner lives of its handful of characters, and the fate that has brought them together at the dawn of a new human era. At times irrecoverably tangled in the attitudes of its day, Devil's Tor nevertheless builds to a transcendent final vision of the ultimate purpose of human life and suffering.
