The ability to critically read health research literature and determine its validity is a cornerstone of evidence-based medicine (EBM) and health care (EBHC). Using this knowledge, along with their individual clinical experience and the preferences of their patients, to make informed decisions about treatment is an essential skill for a healthcare practitioner. This fully updated edition of a highly successful text educates the principles of research study methodology and design, along with core elements of biostatistics and epidemiology as applied to health care studies. A new chapter on EBM and the media has been added in response to increasing awareness of misinformation from traditional and social media. Accompanying online resources will enable readers to test their learning through a series of questions and exercises, accessible through a code printed inside the book. This is an ideal introductory text for medical and health sciences students and a wide range of other healthcare professionals.

This new ABC title highlights the key areas within the management of common chronic disease conditions which can be influenced by the patient as well and how the healthcare professional can help support this. It defines lifestyle medicine, examines the evidence base and discussing the roles of the patient and the healthcare professional in the practice of lifestyle medicine. It also looks at identifying and explaining modifiable risk factors, the importance of physical activity and medicine adherence, and the role of patient self-monitoring. ABC of Lifestyle Medicine is intended for all general practitioners, nutritionists and dieticians, junior doctors, medical trainees and students.

This book presents a lively, rich, and concise introduction to the key concepts and tools for developing clarity and coherence in academic writing. Well-known authors and linguists David Nunan and Julie Choi argue that becoming an accomplished writer is a career-long endeavor. They describe and provide examples of the linguistic procedures that writers can draw on to enhance clarity and coherence for the reader. Although the focus is on academic writing, these procedures are relevant for all writing. This resource makes complex concepts accessible to the emergent writer and illustrates how these concepts can be applied to their own writing. The authors share examples from a wide range of academic and non-academic sources, from their own work, and from the writing of their students. In-text projects and tasks invite you, the reader, to experiment with principles and ideas in developing your identity and voice as a writer.

The stories of expatriates in Hong Kong - the most dynamic, dramatic and diverse city in the Asia-Pacific region - come to life in this book. Why did they come? Why do they stay? How did Hong Kong change them and their view of the world? What did they gain and what did they lose? Human beings are on the move, driven by economic globalisation, political persecution, love or simple curiosity; and this global flow defines the age in which we live. From these expat stories, larger themes loom: identities transformed; racism, naked and clothed; blended relationships; and the tensions and tolerance engendered through peoples, languages and cultures in contact.

David Nunan’s dynamic learner-centered teaching style has informed and inspired countless TESOL educators around the world. In this fresh, straightforward introduction to teaching English to speakers of other languages he presents teaching techniques and procedures along with the underlying theory and principles. Complex theories and research studies are explained in a clear and comprehensible, yet non-trivial, manner without trivializing them. Practical examples of how to develop teaching materials and tasks from sound principles provide rich illustrations of theoretical constructs. The content is presented through a lively variety of different textual genres including classroom vignettes showing language teaching in action, question and answer sessions, and opportunities to ‘eavesdrop’ on small group discussions among teachers and teachers in preparation. Readers get involved through engaging, interactive pedagogical features and opportunities for reflection and personal application. Each chapter follows the same format so that readers know what to expect as they work through the text. Key terms are defined in a Glossary at the end of the book. David Nunan’s own reflections and commentaries throughout enrich the direct, up-close style of the text.

Whoever coined the phrase 'the middle of nowhere' must have had Broken Hill in mind, because that's where it was -- and still is, although the Road to Nowhere is now all-weather tarmac. Seven hundred miles due west of Sydney. Three hundred and thirty miles northeast of Adelaide. It sprawls about the low range of lode-bearing hills, and, when I was a child, was dominated by the artificial mountains of skimp, grey silt-like stuff that was left over once the ore was extracted from the mines. Most of the skimp dumps are gone now, reprocessed, when extraction techniques improved, for the ore they still contained. To me the town is all the poorer for their demise. It was here that the mighty BHP-Billiton, largest resource company in the world, was born. It is also where I first saw the light of day -- although, unlike BHP (Broken Hill Proprietary Ltd.), my appearance in this place at that time was purely coincidental. This collection of stories is a memoir of what it was like to grow up in Broken Hill in the 1950s and 1960s. It was prompted by a question from one of my daughters, who grew up in a very different time and place. 'What was it like' she asked. 'Back there. Back then.'(Publisher's note: Spellings and vocabulary are Australian English; a glossary of terms that may be unfamiliar to North Americans is provided at the back of the book.)

This carefully crafted collection provides a snapshot of the evolution of David Nunan‘s theoretical and empirical contributions to the field of second language education over the last 40 years. The volume focuses on the development of his work on second language curricula, and in particular, the work for which he is best known: learner-centered education and task-based learning and teaching. David Nunan has been a language teacher, researcher and consultant for 40 years. He has lived and worked in many countries, principally in the Asia-Pacific region, but also in the Americas, Europe and the Middle-East. In addition to his research and scholarly work, he is the author of several major textbook series for the teaching and learning of English as a foreign Language. These texts are based on his task-based language teaching approach, and are widely used in schools, school systems and universities around the world.

Perfect for summer school, before/after school intervention, community-based English tutoring programs, and dual-language instruction programs, GO FOR IT! develops students' school survival vocabulary and language skills through its lively pace, engaging topics, and variety of activities.

The field of task-based language teaching has developed considerably since the publication of Designing Tasks for the Communicative Classroom (Nunan, 1989), a book which helped to set the research agenda in teaching methodology for the following decade. While Designing Tasks underpins this new title, the material has been thoroughly updated and includes four completely new chapters. Task-Based Language Teaching offers a comprehensive and up-to-date appraisal of the field.

Knowledge and Discourse presents an ecological approach to the study of discourse in social, academic and professional practices. It brings together distinguished scholars from diverse cultures - India, China, Australia, Canada among others - and disciplines - linguistics, anthropology, sociology, philosophy. The chapters collectively illustrate the ecological approach by exploring how language makes connections between subjective experiences as people construct meaning and action. This book offers the reader a holistic, interdisciplinary approach to the study of language as discourse, questioning traditional views of disciplinary knowledge and the role of discourse in the pursuit, construction and compartmentalisation of such knowledge. Through the variety of disciplines, experiences and approaches, the contributors show how the world and word are contingent on each other. The notions of connectivity, contingency and change are themes that run through the book, and in the interweaving of these themes readers will find persuasive illustrations of an ecological approach to applied linguistics.

Based on the belief that teachers ultimately are responsible for their own professional development, this book explores the concept of reflective teaching and provides practical advice on how to examine critically one's own teaching practices.

Second Language Teaching and Learning is a practical guide to the methodology of task-based language instruction. Replete with illustrative scenarios and topics for discussion and writing, this professional title provides the pedagogical overview that ESL/EFL teachers need to teach with Atlas, Go For It!, Listen In, and Expressions!

The ATLAS VIDEO LAB GUIDE is a two-level video lab series to help students to improve their listening skills. Each 3-5 minute passage is repeated on the tape in a variety of edited formats to allow students to complete a number of activities practicing different listening strategies (with rewinding unnecessary).

Advances in second language teaching methodology, including new emphases on learner-centeredness and individualised instruction, have significantly changed the roles teachers play in the classroom and made ever greater demands upon their classroom management skills. Nunan and Lamb help language teachers to meet these new demands by providing them with the practical knowledge and skills necessary for the effective management of teaching and learning in today’s classrooms. The central focus of the book is on the independent decisions teachers must make in key areas such as lesson planning, teacher talk, group work, error correction, resource management, and evaluation. The text uses a task-based approach, and the material presented is well supported by theory and research.
