It's a perfect Wednesday evening on the banks of the Ohio River, and Councilman Dylan Webb is riding high. Recently elected, both powerful and popular, Webb's gearing up for a rare dinner date amid his busy schedule. In a matter of minutes, it all turns upside down. Two muggers corner Webb outside his home and force him into his own car at gunpoint. For the next hour, he drives the streets of Cincinnati trying to convince his abductors not to kill him. He's ultimately freed, but the moment of relief quickly explodes into a new firestorm, as the police and media doubt his story. As Dylan and a local reporter dig into evidence that something deeper is lurking, bodies start to pile up. And the closer they get to the truth, the more they fear they may be next.
Laboratories of Autocracy walked through the hidden breadth, depth, and intensity of the countrywide attack on democracy. The final chapters outlined thirty steps necessary to fight back. One of the most common responses from readers was-"I skipped to the end. I wanted to get to the solutions." Saving Democracy is the companion book that skips to the end: -It details how we all can and must play a role in saving democracy at this fraught time.-It explains how all levels of the pro-democracy side, from national political leaders to grassroots activists to everyday Americans, must switch to offense.-It explains how to stay on offense and win on offense. Immediately, and everywhere. But it doesn't do this at 30,000 feet. It's a user's manual, intended to spur action. Your action. After a quick review of the true battle for democracy we are engaged in, each chapter explains how YOU, the reader, can and must play the leading role in lifting democracy. It details the concrete steps individuals and groups can take where you live, lists resources that can help along the way, and offers case studies and best practices that have worked elsewhere. Saving Democracy is structured to challenge and guide each reader-no matter your role in your community or politics or where you work-on how you each can play a more active and effective role in lifting democracy than you might have imagined. Over the course of the book, you will construct your own personal plan to fight for democracy. And when you're finished, you'll be ready to get to work.
A propulsive political thriller featuring two outsiders caught up in a stunning conspiracy, filled with details and twists that only a true political insider could write. When one of the nation's most prestigious senators jumps from a cliff in Maine, it is no surprise that the political elite and the media flock to the story, determined to uncover what has happened--and whether foul play was involved. Palmer Knight, a fast-rising TV news correspondent, is sent to cover the mysterious death, and finds himself embroiled in a plot that goes far beyond the Senate and onto the global stage. Meanwhile, Army veteran and former Supreme Court clerk Amity Jones thought she had left the fast lane behind when she moved to Ohio to care for her cancer-stricken mother. But her dogged pursuit of a local medical mystery places bring her back to the world of politics, and ultimately into Palmer's investigation of the senator's death. The unlikely duo, brought together by seemingly unconnected events, soon find themselves enmeshed in a political conspiracy that reaches the highest levels of power, and places their lives--and many others--in terrible danger.
"It's the statehouses, stupid." Laboratories of Autocracy shows that far more than the high-profile antics of politicians like Marjorie Taylor Greene or Jim Jordan-and yes, even bigger than Donald Trump's "Big Lie"-it's anonymous, often corrupt politicians in statehouses across the country who pose the greatest dangers to American democracy. Because these statehouses no longer operate as functioning democracies, these unknown politicians have all the incentive to keep doing greater damage, and can not be held accountable however extreme they get. This has driven steep declines in states like Ohio and others across the country. And collectively, it's placed American democracy in its greatest peril since the dawn of the Jim Crow era. But Pepper doesn't stop there. He lays out a robust pro-democracy agenda outlining how everyone from elected officials to business leaders to everyday citizens can fight back.

Becoming a Teacher provides a broad context for understanding education, addressing issues such as the influence of international policy and practice, education ideology and social justice. This is balanced with practical advice for the classroom on topics such as assessment for learning, learning technologies, literacy, numeracy and English as an additional language. Becoming a Teacher draws extensively on contemporary research and empirical evidence to support critical reflection about learning and teaching. Encouraging you to reflect on your knowledge and beliefs, it explores some of the complex social and cultural influences that influence professional learning and practice. The approach chimes with the government’s recognition that trainee teachers should take a research-informed approach towards classroom practice. The fifth edition is refreshed and revitalized throughout, with:• a complete revision of each chapter• new chapters on 'Reforming ITE', 'Teachers Lives and Careers', 'International Influences', 'Engagement and Motivation', ‘Learning and the Emotions', 'Data Usage in Schools', 'Safeguarding' and 'Learning with Digital Technologies'• up-to-date referencing of research findings • insightful policy analysis• critical commentary on issuesFor those training to teach in secondary school on a Postgraduate Certificate in Education (PGCE) or a School Direct programme, or taking an undergraduate or postgraduate Education Studies course, Becoming a Teacher provides invaluable support, insight and guidance.“With every new edition this book confirms its place as one of the most commanding, authoritative and influential texts in teacher education”. In The Wingman, veteran Midwestern reporter Jack Sharpe has made it big thanks to the deep-rooted voter-fraud conspiracy he uncovered in The People's House (the first of the series). Sharpe catches a whiff that something rotten is taking place in the Democratic Presidential primary, and ultimately discovers an elaborate scheme to put a corrupt and dangerous politician in the nation's highest office by any means necessary. Dark money, drone technology, paramilitary government contractors, neglected veterans, kompromat--we see these issues in the news every day. But in The Wingman David Pepper shows that if shadowy entities with enough incentive and resources were to connect and exploit these issues, the American people would be largely powerless to stop them. Jack must risk his life and reputation to get to the bottom of the story before the disturbing plot he and his team have uncovered becomes reality.
First Published in 2004. Capitalism continues to degrade ecosystems and create social injustice. The 1992 Earth Summit demonstrated that the powerful vested interests behind Western capitalism have no intention of radically changing their goals and methods to help create an environmentally sound or socially just global society. In order to confront this, the green movement must now develop coherent eco-socialist politics. People must control their own lives and their relationship with the environment. Drawing on Marx, Morris, Kropotkin and anarcho-syndicalism, David Pepper presents an anthropocentric analysis of the way forward for green politics and environmental movements. Establishing the elements of a radical eco-socialism, this study rejects biocentrism, simplistic limits to growth and over-population theses, whilst exposing the deficiencies and contradictions of green approaches to post-modern politics and deep ecology. Eco-socialism should provide students of ecology, politics and the environment with a thorough introduction to the ideologies of Marxism, anarchism and deep ecology, and the ways these can be synthesized into a radical green politics.
