'A Taoist Requiem' is a moving meditation on life, death, and spirituality from an Eastern perspective. Scored for a diverse ensemble including piano, harp, woodwinds, brass, strings, and wordless choir/soloists, the Requiem journeys through a challenging psychic landscape familiar to us all. My aim when composing this work was to stay true to the spirit of a traditional requiem while invoking the otherworldliness of Eastern mysticism. The deliberate use of tonality albeit through the lens of modal scales hopefully provides a sense of familiarity and structure. At the same time, the score employs a variety of challenging textural contrasts, from sparse and intimate passages to dense and layered sections, and calls for expert vocal technique in the service of the emotions.

The green oasis of Hiroshima Peace Memorial Park, built at what was once the hypocenter of an atomic blast, is the most visible sign of the city's renaissance as a vibrant and forward-looking center, and a force for peace in the midst of the turbulence of 21st century politics. But it is not the only reminder of the tenacious spirit of life in Hiroshima. Less well-known outside of neighborhood boroughs are the scores of "survivors" dotting the metropolitan landscape. These treasured trees, shrubs, and groves date from before the atomic bombing on August 6th 1945. For whatever reason, they were spared from annihilation, and are now carefully tended by the schools homes, temples, and shrines entrusted by fate with their care. Based on a three-year stay in the city by the authors, this pictorial journey into the heart of Hiroshima documents more than 50 sites and 75 trees. There are maps, bilingual place names and addresses, snapshots of local culture, and overviews of each species of plant. Original translations of five essays by the late a-bomb survivor Tamiki Hara are also included as practical meditations on the meaning of peace in difficult times. Some of this material is not otherwise available in English and deserves a wider audience in this era of perpetual sabre-rattling.

The mandate of the J6G has always been to enrich the cultural life of the outer system starting with the Jupiter Independent Territories. We have the utmost gratitude to the Coalition Science Council for donating the unused wings of their orbital headquarters as gallery space, and for the helpfulness of their Outreach Department in suggesting and editing materials for exhibition. At the same time, we preserve a healthy curatorial independence, and are not afraid of courting controversy by programming exhibits from the Terran Art Museum & Cultural Preservation Society, the New Toronto Museum of Exoplanetary Archaeology at Mars Colony 7, and other revered institutions with an "inner system" perspective not always aligned with that of the CSC. Given our position at the crossroads of local transport, and our physical and spiritual ties to archaeology and space exploration, our goal whatever the exhibition is always to highly the artistry latent in the topic at hand so as to engage the imagination of the broader public. The process is as rewarding as it is challenging.
