David Scott

This book offers a detailed analysis and assessment of the state of education round the world. The argument is made that education and curriculum practices are deficient for two reasons. The first is the adoption by governments, policy-makers and practitioners of a set of knowledge practices that can be broadly characterised as empiricist and technicist, and which has come to dominate how curricula are constructed and certainly how education systems and their work can be described. The second is the adoption of a model of curriculum that is both backward-looking and, in its own terms, confused and muddled. This book then sets out an alternative model, which is more cogent and better focused on human wellbeing.

Reading Educational Research and Policy will improve the ability of teachers to deconstruct policy, research and media texts. This accessible book examines in turn the message systems through which educational meanings are conveyed in modern society: official policy texts; written media and spoken media. Through understanding how and why messages are conveyed, teachers will develop strategies for becoming more critical and reflective of the texts that confront them in their work.

Part biography, part spiritual reading, this beautifully written book brings to light little-known stories from the extraordinary life of Saint Teresa of Calcutta. Here you will meet the woman who challenged the ancient Goddess of Death to become the first saint of our global village. You will learn of the remarkable mystical visions that led her to start the Missionaries of Charity. You will read, in lines drawn from her secret letters, about her long dark night of the soul. And you will discover the infinite love that enabled her to shine through the clouds of despair and suffering that she encountered as she gave herself to God’s work. Let Saint Teresa be your guide, as through this book she shows how you too can receive and radiate the love of Christ in the ordinary events of your life.

The countless sweet photos of her smiling at babies showed Mother Teresa to be a single-minded advocate for the poor. But she was a woman with a will whose strength has been matched by few souls in history. Mother Teresa broke death's stranglehold on the poor of Calcutta, and she showed us how to conquer the sin and darkness in what she called the "slums of the hearts of modern man." Part biography and part spiritual reading, these pages bring to light little-known stories from Mother Teresa's life that will help you to grow in your love of God. You will learn her approach to reading Scripture, what enabled her to persevere through agonizing nights, and the remarkable -- some would say mystical -- events that led her to start the Missionaries of Charity. In considering Mother Teresa, her private visions, and her secret sufferings, David Scott has discovered scores of early episodes and chance encounters that point to later, larger meanings. These remarkable patterns, he suggests, show that Mother Teresa's life was choreographed from above, as if a divine script had been written for her from before her birth. In these pages, you will meet for the first time the Mother Teresa who challenged the ancient Goddess of Death and became the first saint of our global village. You will read her long-secret letters describing the dark nights of her soul. The woman you will meet is one that God Himself sent to you as a clear sign that despite pain and suffering in our lives and in our world, God's good love will prevail . . . beginning in the slums of our hearts. We are all called to holiness, and the saints are sent to us as "real life" examples of God's love. With Mother Teresa as your guide, you'll learn how to follow God's call and find holiness in a world marked by the shadow of death and growing indifference to God. Indeed, you'll learn how to be an everyday missionary of Christ's love in the ordinary activities of your daily life.

Interventions in Education Systems draws on research conducted in England, Mexico, Singapore and Finland to illuminate reform processes to education systems in a range of contexts, to develop a better understanding of intervention processes and to promote the development of more sophisticated models for reforming education systems. The authors compare policy implementations and interventions in countries with different socio-economic profiles and different levels of development, highlighting how these processes in practice all too frequently are side-tracked and distorted, often unintentionally, by political, economic and social forces.

Improving education through policy learning is an important notion for countries in need of educational reform. However, identifying a successful set of practices and transferring them from one national setting to another is a complex exercise. Drawing from their extensive experience, the authors explore a single case study of policy transfer in India, demonstrating how and under what conditions educational reforms can be put into practice successfully and sustainably. Coverage includes: · Policy Learning · Inclusive Practices · School Autonomy and School Leadership · India and its system of education This book offers a unique, international perspective on educational reform and is a useful resource for teachers, policy makers and postgraduate level students.

The ending of the Soviet Union in 1991 had a major political and economic impact on Central Asia. Kyrgyzstan was one of the most severely affected countries, suffering a deeper recession than the other republics. During the first five or six years Kyrgyzstan followed the advice of the International Monetary Fund and was considered a model of both economic and political reform. This book analyses the ability of the newly independent government in Kyrgyzstan to create a realistic national vision, prepare a strategy, organise and control its public services to deliver the desired result. Covering a fifteen year period and using the case study of the educational sector – which declined even though the economic situation in Kyrgyzstan improved – the author throws light on many other aspects of a country in transition, in particular, on strategy, implementation and outcomes. Comparisons with other sectors such as roads and pensions, and in particular the health care sector are presented. A multifaceted approach using case studies, phenomenology, interviews, historical and comparative analyses offers a more complete picture of national management of public service and the structure of government administration. The book also investigates the contribution made by the international aid organisations. A detailed study of institutional transformation in Kyrgyzstan, this book is of interest to academics studying former socialist countries in transition, the history of the Soviet Union and Central Asian studies in general.

Dynamo Island is an account of a contemporary ideal world set in an Ireland-sized island in the middle of the Atlantic ocean. It expresses the possibility of a modern society living in harmonious ecological balance with its environment. The ethos of the place is built around the notion of the human being as a dynamo managing and self-regulating energy in a way that draws on without harming the natural world. One of the island's main features is that there are no cars, only bicycles along with a comprehensive public tram and electric train network.

This book provides an account of an original educational philosophy, developed by one of the most significant philosophers of the late twentieth and early twenty-first centuries, Roy Bhaskar. Though he directed his attention to wider matters than education, his philosophy has implications for the way we can understand how the world is structured and in turn how we can transform it to accommodate a desire for a better arrangement of resources for human well-being. It is thus both a theory of mind and world and in addition, a theory of education. Roy Bhaskar’s philosophy has a view on the following important matters: intentionality, agential capacity, materialism, the possibility of describing and changing the world, progression, education and the lifecourse, essentialism and human nature, pedagogy, knowledge and knowledge-development, the formation of the self, curricular aims and objectives, being with other people, the self in the learning process, the relationship between the self (or agency) and the environment, stratification, emergence, representation and its different modes, structures and mechanisms, the dialectic and criticality.

When David Scott discovered his father was not who he thought he was, it was much more than the discovery of a family secret. It was an eye-opening revelation that explained the drive behind his rise to newspaper and political prominence. The tough upbringing, the disciplines of school and church life and the tears of a lonely child set the scene for a life-long adventure which started on his local newspaper when he was 17 and saw him rise to edit his first newspaper ten years later. This story covers the 'golden years' for local newspapers when advertising revenues and circulations boomed and many monopolistic titles were the next best thing to a licence for printing money. It didn't last. He has observed the sad decline of an industry he cares about and outlines some of the mistakes which he believes will result in the death of many regional newspapers.

One of the most innovative and brilliant philosophers of his generation, but largely neglected until he was brought to public attention by Gilles Deleuze, Gilbert Simondon presents a challenge to nearly every category and method of traditional philosophy. 'Psychic and Collective Individuation' is undoubtedly his most important work and its influence, clearly felt in Stiegler and DeLanda, has continued to grow. David Scott provides the first full introduction to this work, which will inspire as well as instruct philosophers working in Continental thought, philosophy of science, social theory and political philosophy. He introduces Simondon's challenging text by clarifying its complex terminology and structure through a chapter-by-chapter commentary. By placing Simondon and the book in their historical context, Scott invites a dialogue with thinkers including Bergson, Deleuze, Heidegger, Sartre, Merleau-Ponty and Negri, and explains Simondon's relevance to current discussions about biopolitics and post-Nietzschean ethics.

'David Scott belongs firmly to the long tradition of parson-poets that goes back at least as far as George Herbert... For all their reticence, there is a compassion in these poems and a sense of propriety' - Norman Nicholson. Springing from ordinary events, or a picture, or an aspect of the priestly life, David Scott's beautifully restrained poems work up the detail into a moment of significance. They are rooted in an English culture which is found not only in locality, but also in understatement, and the sideways look. But his poetry has wider reverberations, exploring spirituality and ways of praying as well as momentary glimpses of meaning caught in everyday life. David Scott won the National Poetry Competition in 1978, and this new retrospective draws on all the books he has published since then, from A Quiet Gathering (1984) and Playing for England (1989) to Selected Poems (1998) and Piecing Together (2005), with the addition of a whole collection of new poems.
