David Smith surveys the modern missionary movement, examines critical issues concerning the gospel and culture, reflects on mission in the context of violence and suffering, and explores the ‘translation’ of the gospel for today’s globalized world. In his letter to the Romans, Paul makes striking use of the phrase 'the kindness of God' (11:22). The apostle to the Gentiles warns non-Jewish believers in the imperial city of Rome to beware of arrogance, counselling them to 'be afraid' that the kind of spiritual pride which led to the downfall of biblical Israel will also be their undoing. In the deeply troubled times in which we live, this text speaks powerfully to Christians throughout the world, summoning a global church to prioritize what really matters and to discover its unity in the service of the Christ whose life and death revealed in human form precisely the 'kindness of God'. Taking his starting point from Lesslie Newbigin's analysis of the contemporary historical and cultural context, David Smith explores issues in, and challenges to, the practice of Christian mission and witness today. He surveys the modern movement, starting with the World Missionary Conference in Edinburgh in 1910; examines critical issues concerning the gospel and culture; reflects on mission in the context of violence and suffering; and explores the 'translation' of the gospel for a globalized world. He also examines how Scripture was used to justify the political and economic expansion of European power at the dawn of the modern world, and argues that mission today demands both a new hermeneutic and a revised theology of mission, within which Paul's letter to the Romans will play a significant role.

David Smith: Points of Power is the first publication to trace the figurative impulse running throughout the oeuvre of Abstract Expressionist sculptor and painter David Smith (1906-1965). Beautifully designed and printed, it provides a broad overview of his figurative explorations in painting, sculpture, photography and ceramics, which intensified in the years before his death. Most of these are female nudes, worked by Smith into strong, calligraphic forms that often extend the viscous fluidity of enamel (on canvas or linen) into near-abstraction. Smith's ceramic plates offer an even broader range of figurative treatments, from a few minimal incised lines to more defined nudes evoking Greek pottery. The catalogue features an introduction by the artist's daughter, Candida Smith, as well as a scholarly essay by Sarah Hamill and a wealth of archival photographs by Alexander Liberman, taken during the last weekend of Smith's life.

"Aberdeen in the Fifties and Sixties" is a beautfiul collection of photographs displaying images of two of the most exciting decades Aberdonians ever lived through. Skeletons of buildings bombed during the blitz were flattened, events such as the advent of the North Sea oil industry and the arrival of the first Chinese restaurant are all recorded here. It is a fascinating book that will captivate both locals and tourists alike. THE Fifties and Sixties were two of the most exciting decades Aberdonians have ever lived through. Skeletons of buildings bombed during the blitz were flattened, others springing up in their place to create a new landscape. The great exodus from the city centre got under way with major new housing schemes springing up all around the outskirts. This led to the bus becoming king of the road, ending the city's tramway era. Landmarks like Black's Building and Castlehill Barracks became a mere memory and the first high-rise blocks altered the city's skyline. Aberdonians shopped at Reid and Pearsons, Watt and Grants, Isaac Benzie's, The Equitable or the Rubber Shop, all now consigned to memory. Three nights a week there was greyhound racing at the Bridge of Dee. Rock 'n' Roll arrived at the city's dance halls. And two significant events occurred in people's lives - the advent of the North Sea oil industry and the arrival of the first Chinese restaurant. And there to record all the changes were photographers of the "Evening Express". From their Broad Street headquarters they created a unique record of the changing times of Scotland's most northerly city. Brought together for the first time in this unique book, they paint a picture of change over a 20-year period that now seems as sudden as it was dramatic.

This book explores a largely forgotten legacy of multicultural political thought and practice from within Eastern Europe and examines its relevance to post-Cold War debates on state and nationhood. Featuring a Preface by former UK Home Secretary Charles Clarke, it weaves theory and practice to challenge established understandings of the nation state. Eastern Europe is still too often viewed through the prism of ethnic conflict, which overlooks the region’s positive contribution to modern debates on the political management of ethno-cultural diversity, and towards the construction of a united Europe ‘beyond the nation-state’. Based on extensive archival research in Estonia, Latvia, Germany, Russia, as well as the League of Nations Archive in Geneva, this book explores this neglected multicultural legacy and assesses its significance in the post-Cold War era, which has seen the reappearance of national cultural autonomy laws in several states of Eastern Europe. Ethnic Diversity and the Nation State is invaluable reading for students and scholars of political science, history, sociology and European studies, and also for policy makers and others interested in minority rights and ethnic conflict regulation.

The chief prosecution witness in the Moors Murders trial gives his account of the case after more than four decades of silenceDespite standing as chief prosecution witness in the Moors Murders trial, David Smith was vilified by the public due to the accusations thrown at him by Myra Hindley and Ian Brady about his involvement in their crimes. Hindley's later confession that she and Brady had lied in an attempt to reduce their sentences did little to diminish the slurs against his name. For over four decades, Smith was asked by writers and film-makers to tell his story. Apart from a handful of brief interviews, he always refused. Carol Ann Lee met Smith during her research for One of Your Own, her critically acclaimed biography of Hindley, following which he finally agreed to reveal all. In Evil Relations (previously published as Witness), interviews, archival research and, most significantly, David Smith's own vivid memoir are fused to create an unforgettable, often harrowing account of his life before, during and after the Moors Murders. David Smith lived in rural Ireland with his wife prior to his death in May 2012. He is survived by four children and several grandchildren. Carol Ann Lee is an acclaimed biographer and has written extensively on the Holocaust. Her most recent publication, One of Your Own, focused on the life and death of Myra Hindley.

Companies have excelled by treating customers as "markets of one"-offering them personalized buying experiences. But in managing talent, most firms still use one-size-fits-all HR practices. With today's diverse workforces, this approach is preventing organizations from attracting, retaining, and leveraging top talent. In Workforce of One, Susan Cantrell and David Smith show how exceptional companies are tailoring work experiences to employees' talents and interests-customizing job duties, training, recognition, and even compensation, work schedules, and performance appraisals. Their reward? Lower turnover, greater productivity, improved profit margins. The authors present four customization strategies: -Segmenting your workforce; for example, by life stage and learning style -Offering modular choices; e.g., choices regarding rewards, learning needs, or job duties -Defining broad and simple rules, such as evaluating work by outcomes, not time invested, or hiring for potential in addition to specific skills -Fostering employee-defined personalization, whereby employees define their own people practices (e.g., using peer-to-peer technologies to learn from one another) Drawing on extensive proprietary research, the authors explain how to combine aspects of all four strategies to address your organization's unique needs. Improving workforce performance through customized work experiences is the holy grail of the HR function. This book shows you how the workforce-of-one approach positions your company to win-while transforming your HR team into a strategic powerhouse.
