This recreation of Walter Crane's 19th Century book of nursery rhymes is packed with rhymes, riddles, alphabets, and rhyming stories, and illustrated with 300 original illustrations Sir John Gilbert, R. A., John Tenniel, Harrison Weir, Walter Crane, W. Mcconnell, J. B. Zwecker, "And Others." Children and adults alike will delight in these traditionasl, classic nursery rhymes and songs. Young children will learn their alphabet as they enjoy these rhymes. Preserving and republishing this, and similar, nursery rhyme collections helps to preserve the literary and cultural heritage of the English-speaking world, which should never be allowed to sink into obscurity. The history and culture of England are the history and culture of many throughout the world, and should always be cherished. Parents, grandparents, older siblings, and care-givers can do few things better than to encourage young children to read, and to give them words of quality to read; Mother Goose's timeless nursery rhymes will feed the imaginations of the children who hear and read them. Nursery rhymes and illustrations appear in their original order, on their original page numbers, but the arrangement of some illustrations with the rhymes the accompany may not be as they were arranged in the original. Also, the index of first lines has been moved to the end of the book. Nursery rhymes that were acceptable for children of the 19th Century might prove confusing or unsettling for children of the 21st Century, so far removed in tiome from the manners and issues of that time; parents are encouraged to read these rhymes with their children.
This little book is a reproduction of the work published in 1866. The interior illustrations are digital reproductions of the originals, and will bring pleasure to the children and adults who delight in the nursery rhymes that inspire their imaginations with the traditions and culture of Old England, and hint at the history of that ancient country. From the introduction: "Gammer Gurton's Garland, or the Nursery Parnassus," was originally issued at Stockton, as a small twopenny brochure, in 32mo, without a date, "printed by and for R. Christopher." Sir Harris Nicholas says it appeared in the year 1783, "one of the most prolific of Ritson's pen." Haslewood is of opinion that it appeared about the same period as "The Bishopric Garland, or Durham Minstrel," which was printed at Stockton for the same R. Christopher in 1784. "Gammer Gurton's Garland" was again printed, with additions, 1809, in 8vo. This little work, a great favourite with those for whose amusement it was compiled, has been more than once reprinted since. The present edition has been very carefully executed, and rendered complete by the addition of an index. "The impression has been limited to one hundred copies small paper, and twelve copies large paper. "Glasgow, mdccclxvi." Caution to parents: The nursery rhymes and songs in this book were written for the children of the 18th and 19th Centuries; 21st Century children may be unsettled or disturbed by some of the images in the rhymes. Parents should read these nursery rhymes with their children, and help them to understand the history, traditions, and cultures of those times.

"Peter Piper, without Pretension to Precocity or Profoundness, Puts Pen to Paper to Produce these Puzzling Pages, Purposely to Please the Palates of Pretty Prattling Playfellows, Proudly Presuming that with Proper Penetration it will Probably, and Perhaps Positively, Prove a Peculiarly Pleasant and Profitable Path to Proper, Plain and Precise Pronunciation. "He Prays Parents to Purchase this Playful Performance, Partly to Pay him for his Patience and Pains; Partly to Provide for the Printers and Publishers; but Principally to Prevent the Pernicious Prevalence of Perverse Pronunciation." Parents and children alike will delight at this recreation of the 1836 book that launched the famously popular Peter Piper on his career of picking pickled peppers by the peck. Along with his alliterative companions, Peter Piper provides a full alphabet of challenging tongue twisters, which will still appeal to the current generation. Illustrated with digital reproductions of the original woodcuts, this is a book every family will enjoy.

This republication of "The Big Book of Nursery Rhymes," newly arranged to best display the rhymes and their original illustrations, while maintaining the original pagination, is intended to reintroduce the nursery rhymes of a century past to the children of today. Nursery rhymes carry fragments of the history, culture, religion, and ideas of the 15th or 16th through the 19th Centuries, which should be preserved and passed on to new generations. Parents and children will love reading these rhymes, and will delight in the wonderful illustrations. Originally Edited by Walter Jerrold. Illustrated by Charles Robinson. Published by Blackie and Son, Ltd., London, 1920. From the Introduction: "The very title, Nursery Rhymes, which has come to be associated with a great body of familiar verse, is in itself sufficient indication of the manner in which that verse has been passed down from generation to generation. Who composed the little pieces it is, save in a few cases, impossible to say: some are certainly very old and were doubtless repeated thousands of times before their first appearance in print. References to certain favourites may be found in the pages of the dramatists of Elizabeth's time. "Attempts are sometimes made to read into these Rhymes a deeper significance than the obvious and simple one which has accounted for their enduring popularity in the Nursery, but this volume has no concern with such profound interpretations, any more than have the little people who love the old jingles best. "Students divide our rhymes into narrative pieces, historical, folk-lore, game rhymes, counting-out rhymes, jingles, fragments, and so forth, but for the children for whom and by whom they are remembered, and for whose sake they are here collected and pictured anew, they are just-Nursery Nursery Rhymes." Caution to Parents: Nursery rhymes that were acceptable for children of the 19th Century might prove confusing or unsettling for children of the 21st Century, so far removed in tiome from the manners and issues of that time; parents are encouraged to read these rhymes with their children.

Join the five green speckled frogs in their frolicking adventure Five delightful frogs dive into the cool water of a pond to entertain and delight children, and to help them learn the concepts of counting and subtraction. Based on a traditional nursery song by Mother Goose, the story is retold and expanded for today's young learners. The five green speckled frogs introduce the concept of counting up to 5, and introduce the concept of zero. Children have the opportunity at the end of the book to learn higher counting skills, first counting to 25, and then counting to 100. Each verse includes counting the frogs, and ends with the concept of subtraction, such as 5-1=4. Reading level: 2nd grade Math level: Kindergarten to 1st grade. Nearly everyone knows and loves at least a few nursery rhymes learned in childhood. We sing or recite them in games as children. We sing them to our children to hush them to sleep. Some are so familiar as songs that we forget that they were originally in that vast collection of rhymes and verses attributed to Mother Goose. Nursery rhymes are an important part of our language, and of our cultural heritage. They should be preserved and remembered for their richness. They carry fragments of our history. They carry fragments of our faith. They carry fragments of our identity. Many of these nursery rhymes are the versions I learned in my childhood. Many have other versions that are not collected here. The words change with time, with place, with the changes in our culture. I hope readers of these nursery rhymes, children and adults alike, will enjoy the versions collected here. I did not write any of these nursery rhymes. They exist in the public domain; I have simply gathered them together as a matter of convenience. Enjoy

Isn't it strange how memories don't stay the same, even from one day to the next? Unlike books, memories are fluid, rewriting the past as we progress into the future. When we gather memories into books, we force them to be static. The result, which may read as truth to one, may seem like fiction, or even falsehood, to another. This is the story of one woman's childhood, growing up in a rural mill town in Vermont. It is told as a series of memories of simpler times and colorful adventures. Her life story takes a few interesting side trips as she explores her world, discovers boys, and survives painful losses.
