Demosthenes was punched in the face by Meidias in the theatre at Athens in 348 BC. His prosecution - a masterpiece of Greek oratorical prose - is one of the most intriguing forensic speeches to survive. It not only details Demosthenes' personal feud with Meidias but, in passing, gives valuable information about Athenian law and festivals, and especially about the Greek concept of hubris (insolent behaviour). This edition, originally published in 1990, represents the latest scholarship on the text, collating a larger number of MSS than hitherto. It includes a very full introduction on historical, legal, literary and textual matters; a complete facing-page translation; and a detailed commentary.

Demosthenes' speech On the Crown is one of the finest artistic achievements of Greek prose. Delivered in an Athenian court in 330 BCE, and circulated in written form soon afterwards, the speech made an immediate impression on contemporary Greeks and for centuries served the writers and speakers of antiquity as the primary model of forceful argument and vigorous style. In this volume Harvey Yunis presents a new edition of the speech. The book contains an introductory essay outlining the historical situation that gave rise to the speech, the nature of Demosthenes' rhetorical art, and the history of the text. A new Greek text of the speech is accompanied by a select textual apparatus. The greater part of the book consists of a commentary, which elucidates the text and makes clear how Demosthenes achieved his objectives.

In 346 BC. the Athenians negotiated a peace treaty with King Philip II of Macedon, but afterwards one of the Athenian ambassadors, Demosthenes, accused another, Aiskhines, of accepting a bribe from Philip to contrive that the terms of the treaty should be favourable to him. The case came to trial three years later, and On the False Embassy is the speech which Demosthenes prepared for the prosecution. It is one of the most famous pieces of ancient oratory, and it is also one of the principal sources of information about the politics of its period. This volume is on the same lines as Professor MacDowell's previous edition of Demosthenes' speech Against Meidias. It includes an introduction concentrating especially on the historical circumstances, a revised Greek text based on fresh study of the manuscripts, an English translation on pages facing the text, and the first detailed commentary on the speech for over a hundred years.

This edition is in part a new work, and partly a revised and expanded version of the Pitt Press edition by J. M. MacGregor (Cambridge University Press, 1915). The Introduction is based on MacGregor's, revised and with an additional sections on Olynthos and the Chalcidian League, and Demosthenes' oratory. There is a also a new bibliography. The Greek text follows, along with a completely new commentary by E. I. McQueen, concentrating mainly on questions of grammar and syntax. The two Appendixes, on the Order of the Olynthiac Speeches and the Theoric Fund, have been completely rewritten to take account of modern scholarship.

This is part three of a four-unit prose reading course designed for beginners in Greek and other learners wishing to consolidate their reading skills. Particular attention is paid to idiomatic usage (both in Greek and English), word order and the use of particles and particle-combinations, while practical guidance is given on mastering the verbal systems and other features of the language which beginners generally find problematic.
