My only qualifications are: 1) 32 years of successful teaching. 2) Running a helpline for stressed teachers on behalf of the West Sussex Teachers' Association for 16 years. And of course the one thing anybody can tell you is that teachers are idiosyncratic. In the end you have to teach your way not mine. But listen to an old master - learn from my mistakes then you can make your own "Taking ownership of your pedagogy" is what they call it. I would caution you to avoid the word "pedagogy" around Sun readers. They will have burnt your house down before they have looked in the dictionary and found out it is not the same as "pedo". The resurgence of socialist ideas in the UK and around the world has led to a renewed interest in the ideas of Leon Trotsky. Although he was hounded, exiled and ultimately assassinated, Trotsky's ideas live on in a new generation. The Death Agony of Capitalism and the Tasks of the Fourth International is the full title of this work and it sets out the situation which faced the working class movement in 1938. It has many echoes in the present situation. Trotsky's work is continued by the Committee for a Workers' International.

This is a collection of a dozen detective stories. It introduces the Durrington Detective Agency and the heroes, Craig McLairy, Micah McLairy and Barker who is sometimes called Hairy McLairy to differentiate him from bald Craig. There are a host of other characters who fulfil the role of murderer, murderee or that classic in detective fiction the red herring. We were inspired by Jeanne M Dams whose detective stories are referred to as 'cozy'. All that means is that there is no graphic sex or violence. The same term could apply to most of Agatha Christie's books. I do hope this book does not make Durrington into an equivalent of Oxford, Midsomer or anything in the orbit of Miss Marple - a place where you won't live long. I live in Durrington and I have not been murdered even once. Many of the locations are real. The John Selden for example is a first-rate pub and within walking distance of our home which is convenient. All the references to people are fictitious.
