Though primarily known as a children's author, E. (Edith) Nesbit had a remarkably broad range as a writer, penning many collections of short stories and poetry geared for children and adults over the course of her career. Man and Maid is a novel intended for a mainstream adult readership that delves into that most timeless of topics: love relationships between men and women.

This story tells of brave Dickie Harding, the engaging little lame boy who lived at New Cross and spent a year with a tramp, besides having many other wonderful adventures. It tells, too, how Dickie nearly was made to be a burglar, of his great moon-flower, and the magic of its seeds, and how he slipped back in history five hundred years and became Master Richard Arden, who was not lame and poor, and how and why he came back again; of the Mouldiwarp, the Mouldierwarp, and the great Mouldiestwarp and what they did; of the buried treasure and how Dick and his friends found it, and so on to the end of the book.

A short collection of seven ghostly tales by the author better known for her works for younger readers, like The Railway Children and Five Children and It. Of the seven, two are extraordinarily slight (one has the feel of a retold urban legend), and most of the seven are a tad predictable in that they hinge on the meme of love being more powerful than death.

When five siblings - Cyril, Anthea, Robert, Jane and their baby brother, the Lamb - discover a sand-fairy in their gravel pit, they are jolly surprised and a little delighted. Even better, the Psammead is able to grant them wishes, although the magic wears off at the day's end. Unfortunately, all of the wishes the children make go hilariously wrong and they soon learn that their foolish desires are more likely to get them into trouble than get them what they want Five Children and It has been loved by children - and their parents - for over a hundred years. And Cyril, Anthea, Robert, Jane and Lamb will continue to be loved, with the appearance of Kate Saunders' Five Children on the Western Front, an epic, heart-wrenching follow on from Five Children and It and the Psammead trilogy.

Edith Nesbit was one of the most prolific and beloved children's authors of her time, but she also had a more literary bent, as evinced in The Rainbow and the Rose, one of several of the collections of poetry she penned in her lifetime. This compendium of verse tackles topics ranging from the quotidian to the profound in a traditional rhyming style that will please poetry purists.

This is the third in Edith Nesbit's ever-popular Treasure Seekers series, after The Treasure Seekers and The Wouldbegoods. This classic children's tale brings back the much-loved characters of Dora, Oswald, Dicky, Alice, Noel and H. O. Bastable as they stumble into yet more comic adventures. Teresa Gallagher read the previous two books in this highly praised series and returns to recount more japes in her colourful array of children's voices.

From the author of The Railway Children and Five Children and It comes this tale of six siblings and their adventures in Victorian London. The Bastable children are determined to restore their impoverished family's fortune, and each chapter of this hilarious book finds them busily attempting another get-rich-quick scheme: digging for treasure, becoming detectives and highway robbers, selling wine, and earnestly chasing other comic ventures.

In this much-loved children's classic first published in 1906, the comfortable lives of three well-mannered siblings are greatly altered when, one evening, two men arrive at the house and take their father away. With the family's fortunes considerably reduced in his absence, the children and their mother are forced to live in a simple country cottage near a railway station. There the young trio - Roberta, Peter, and young Phyllis - befriend the porter and station master. The youngsters' days are filled with adventure and excitement, including their successful attempt to avert a horrible train disaster; but the mysterious disappearance of their father continues to haunt them.

Royal Children of English History By E. Nesbit

The best works by the greatest writer in the English language, retold in simple prose for young readers. Over 400 years ago, William Shakespeare wrote many memorable and beautiful plays and sonnets. These works have inspired generations of readers and writers, and continue to be read and performed even today. They have been recreated quite often but rarely for children. Keeping this in mind, in 1907, beloved children's author E. Nesbit, rewrote twenty of Shakespeare's most popular plays in simple, lively prose--from the comedies like Much Ado About Nothing, The Taming of the Shrew and the ever-popular Midsummer Night's Dream to the tragedies of Macbeth, Othello, Hamlet and Romeo and Juliet. Nesbit's vivid retellings of these plays and her selection of Shakespeare's famous quotes--along with an introduction by Ruskin Bond--are a perfect stepping stone for young readers into these great works of world literature.
