"The Raven" is one of Edgar Allen Poe's most famous poems, but it is harder to choose his greatest short story. Is it, "The Tell-Tale Heart"? Or, "The Cask of Amontillado"? Or perhaps "The Fall of the House of Usher"? In this collection, you can read "The Raven" and fifteen of Poe's greatest stories, and decide for yourself which is the best. Also included in this volume: "The Pit and the Pendulum," "The Black Cat," "The Murders in the Rue Morgue," "The Purloined Letter," "Ms. Found in a Bottle," "The Facts in the Case of M. Valdemar," "The Premature Burial," "The Masque of Red Death," "The Balloon Hoax," "William Wilson," "The System of Dr. Tarr and Prof. Fether," and last but not least, "Hop Frog."

The epithets "Grotesque" and "Arabesque" will be found to indicate with sufficient precision the prevalent tenor of the tales here published. But from the fact that, during a period of some two or three years, I have written five-and-twenty short stories whose general character may be so briefly defined, it cannot be fairly inferred - at all events it is not truly inferred - that I have, for this species of writing, any inordinate, or indeed any peculiar taste or prepossession. I may have written with an eye to this republication in volume form, and may, therefore, have desired to preserve, as far as a certain point, a certain unity of design. This is, indeed, the fact; and it may even happen that, in this manner, I shall never compose anything again. I speak of these things here, because I am led to think it is this prevalence of the "Arabesque" in my serious tales, which has induced one or two critics to tax me, in all friendliness, with what they have been pleased to term "Germanism" and gloom. The charge is in bad taste, and the grounds of the accusation have not been sufficiently considered. Let us admit, for the moment, that the "phantasy-pieces" now given are Germanic, or what not. Then Germanism is "the vein" for the time being. To morrow I may be anything but German, as yesterday I was everything else.

By late accounts from Rotterdam, that city seems to be in a high state of philosophical excitement. Indeed, phenomena have there occurred of a nature so completely unexpected-so entirely novel-so utterly at variance with preconceived opinions-as to leave no doubt on my mind that long ere this all Europe is in an uproar, all physics in a ferment, all reason and astronomy together by the ears.

Initially composed by Poe as a public lecture towards the end of his career and considered by him the culmination of all his life’s work, Eureka is an extended treatise about the creation, existence and the ultimate end of the world. An idiosyncratic blend of creative writing and scientific discourse, with unexpected forays into comedy and wordplay, this self-styled “prose poem” is a genre-defying masterpiece. Although it baffled the reading public of its time, Eureka found many prominent admirers, from Charles Baudelaire to W. H. Auden, and has since assembled an audience receptive to its unique appeal as a compendium of European thought that anticipated many current theories and discoveries while also pioneering many elements of science-fiction aesthetics.

Since their first publication in the 1830s and 1840s, Edgar Allan Poe's extraordinary Gothic tales have established themselves as classics of horror fiction and have also created many of the conventions which still dominate the genre of detective fiction. Yet, as well as being highly enjoyable, Poe's tales are works of very real intellectual exploration. Abandoning the criteria of characterization and plotting in favour of blurred boundaries between self and other, will and morality, identity and memory, Poe uses the Gothic to question the integrity of human existence. Indeed, Poe is less interested in solving puzzles or in moral retribution than in exposing the misconceptions that make things seem `mysterious' in the first place. Attentive to the historical and political dimensions of these very American tales, this critical edition selects twenty-four tales and places the most popular -- 'The Pit and the Pendulum', `The Fall of the House of Usher', `The Masque of the Red Death', `The Murders in the Rue Morgue, and `The Purloined Letter' -- alongside less well-known travel narratives, metaphysical essays, and political satires.

Dagens Nyheter

The only novel of Poe tell us the story of Arthur Gordon Pym, a New England boy that sailors away and cross over the globe having many adventures and misfortunes. From Revolts, crashing ships and even cannibalism to the very far South Pole. Poe has commented that his novel was a bit silly in many regards, buy it remains an inspiration as it was for Melville's "Moby Dick" and Verne's "20,000 Leagues under the sea". He found the seed of the story 1836 in a newspaper article about a shipwreck and the rescue of the two gentlemen on board. Poe ingrain this famous tale with such allegorical abundance, biblical symbolism, and psychological insights. It calls thought to the act of writing and to the problem of illustrating the truth. It is an archetypal American story of a breakout from family life tracing a young man's initiatory rite through a series of extreme encounters with death during a fateful sea trip. Included are eight related stories which make Pym a profound character by their treatment of constant topics; incredible voyages, gigantic maelstroms, and early funerals, as well as the life and relationship with art of the author.

Edgar Allan Poe is best known for his short stories, but he really was a natural poet. From the immortal classics "Annabel Lee", "The Raven" and "The Bells" to the exquisite lyrics of "To Helen" Poe stands alongside the most acclaimed English romantic poets like Keats, Byron and Shelley. His nostalgic and sensuous poetics vision influncence profoundly by Victorian greatest Rossetti, Tennyson and Swinburne. To this day, his oscure side speaks eloquently to contemporary reader in poems like "The Conqueror Worm" and "The Haunted Palace" with the strong frightening images of absurdity and the macabre. Even at the end of his life, Poe reached out to his art for bravery and comfort, giving us in "Eldorado" a talisman to hold during our gloomy moments-a timeless gift from a great American writer.
