Edith Wharton, a master of social observation, turns her sharp wit to the world of women's clubs and high society in "Xingu." This collection of short stories offers a delightful and enduring satire on intellectual pretension and the sometimes-farcical pursuits of privileged circles. With characteristic elegance and insightful prose, Wharton explores the dynamics within these exclusive groups, exposing the vulnerabilities and absurdities that lie beneath the veneer of sophistication. "Xingu" is a humorous and thought-provoking examination of social ambition, intellectual posturing, and the timeless human foibles that transcend generations. Readers will find themselves both amused and enlightened by Wharton's keen eye for detail and her masterful storytelling. A cornerstone of literary fiction, this collection continues to resonate with its clever commentary on human nature. New York lawyer Stephen Glennard, in an effort to raise money to pay for his upcoming wedding to his sweetheart, sells love letters written to him by deceased author Margaret Aubyn. Unsurprisingly, this action comes back to haunt him and his marriage, and exposes a betrayal that becomes the talk of New York society. In Wharton's signature style, the ideas of love and loyalty are explored in this brief novella--Wharton's first to be published in 1900--that has lessons on privacy and morality for the twenty-first century as well.

Mrs. Ballinger is one of the ladies who pursue Culture in bands, as though it were dangerous to meet alone. To this end she had founded the Lunch Club, an association composed of herself and several other indomitable huntresses of erudition. The Lunch Club, after three or four winters of lunching and debate, had acquired such local distinction that the entertainment of distinguished strangers became one of its accepted functions; in recognition of which it duly extended to the celebrated "Osric Dane," on the day of her arrival in Hillbridge, an invitation to be present at the next meeting.

Xingu' is a short story about a woman's luncheon club devised as a means of keeping its members up to date with the latest goings on in the world. After the glamorous novelist Osric Dane stuns the other women with her bored disposition and blunt questions, the conversation is left stale - that is, until the previously quiet Mrs. Roby mentions the topic of Xingu. Thought mad by the rest of her peers, Mrs. Roby is suddenly engaged by a now-inquisitive Ms. Dane, and subsequently the rest of the party becomes entirely engrossed with the mystery of Xingu. A witty and veritably comical narrative sure to entertain all who read it, 'Xingu' is a masterpiece of short story-writing and is a must-read for fans of Wharton's seminal work.
