The legacy of a country is in its varied cultural heritage, historical literature, developments in the field of economy and science. The top nations in the world are competing in the field of science, economy and literature. This vast legacy has to be conserved and documented so that it can be bestowed to the future generation. The knowledge of this legacy is slowly getting perished in the present generation due to lack of documentation. Keeping this in mind, the concern with retrospective acquiring of rare books has been accented recently by the burgeoning reprint industry. Maxwell Press is gratified to retrieve the rare collections with a view to bring back those books that were landmarks in their time. In this effort, a series of rare books would be republished under the banner, "Maxwell Press". The books in the reprint series have been carefully selected for their contemporary usefulness as well as their historical importance within the intellectual. We reconstruct the book with slight enhancements made for better presentation, without affecting the contents of the original edition. Most of the works selected for republishing covers a huge range of subjects, from history to anthropology. We believe this reprint edition will be a service to the numerous researchers and practitioners active in this fascinating field. We allow readers to experience the wonder of peering into a scholarly work of the highest order and seminal significance.

What is food? This volume, written by a doctor, contains all the ways in which the question might be answered. First published in 1883, and reissued because there is nothing quite like it today, this unique study was undertaken at a time when foreign produce and new foods were becoming more widely available, and rising living standards were making familiar foods more accessible to all, prompting an interest in their origins and their nutritive qualities as revealed by scientific research into their chemical composition, preparation and physiological effects.

This book is not another history focusing just on doctors, nurses and hospitals, though they are mentioned here. This story takes a broader look at the range of people who have cared for the sick or injured in Canada's history, and who applied both art and science to heal bodies, souls and minds in a variety of ways, and often without expecting payment. The cast of characters includes shamans, mothers, chiropractors, apothecaries, midwives, dentists and research scientists, among others.

The present anthology of cantatas for medium to low voice and continuo complements the editor's previous volume of cantatas for soprano, ranging from the late 17th century to mid 18th century. The works were selected for their intrinsic beauty but also for their suitability to voice students whose abilities are still limited. As in the previous collection, the setting for these works is an imaginary Arcadia, peopled by nymphs and shepherds lamenting the indifference or the absence of the beloved. This age-old theme is expressed in a remarkable variety of styles and forms, from Stradella's fluid merging of recitative, arioso and aria to Scarlatti's clear separation of recitative and da capo aria in a succession of sharply contrasting moods. Of special note are the two works by Gasparini and Porpora which include a written-out part for the harpsichord.
