A Pygmalion-style story told with von Arnim’s characteristic wit and charm, this novel introduces us to Salvatia (known as Sally), a much longed-for child to humble shopkeepers. Sally grows up to be an extremely beautiful girl, attracting the attentions of every man who sees her. When her mother dies, her father decides it is just too difficult to defend her virtue and marries her to the first man who proposes. But Jocelyn is about to learn a lesson in marrying for looks alone. The two are from very different classes and have nothing in common: beauty can only bridge the gap so far. Meanwhile, his mother is being pursued by her own unsuitable suitor – debating if she can tolerate his crass personality in return for the security of his wealth. Von Arnim turns her ironic humour to great effect in showing us the follies of her cast of characters, whom we can’t help wishing the best for, despite everything.

The Enchanted April, Elizabeth von Arnim's brilliant, irrepressible novella, tells the tale of four very different women who, on answering an advertisement in The Times, find themselves far away from the drizzle of London and instead in the warmth of an Italian sun. There, alongside the lapping of the Mediterranean, the women's spirits begin to shift, and quite unexpected changes take place.
"The Enchanted April" by Elizabeth Von Arnim is a novel set in post-World War I England, following four women who take a month-long holiday in an Italian castle overlooking the Mediterranean Sea. The women are all strangers to each other, but they all share a feeling of dissatisfaction with their lives and a longing for something more. Lotty Wilkins, a housewife, is the catalyst for the trip, and she persuades Mrs. Arbuthnot, a widow; Lady Caroline Dester, a beautiful but aloof socialite; and Mrs. Fisher, a dowager with a love of literature, to join her on the journey. Each woman has her own reasons for accepting the invitation, and as they settle into the castle, they begin to open up to each other and rediscover themselves. As they explore the beautiful Italian countryside and interact with the locals, they each experience a sense of transformation and renewal. The novel explores themes of friendship, love, and personal growth, as the women confront their own insecurities and learn to appreciate the beauty and joy in life. By the end of their enchanting April, the women have not only forged deep bonds with each other but also discovered new perspectives on their own lives, and have a newfound sense of hope and possibility for the future.
The novel follows four dissimilar women in the 1920s England who leave their rainy, grey environments to go on holiday in Italy. Mrs. Arbuthnot and Mrs. Wilkins, who belong to the same ladies' club but have never spoken, become acquainted after reading a newspaper advertisement for a small medieval castle on the Mediterranean to be let furnished for the month of April. They find some common ground in that both are struggling to make the best of unhappy marriages. They also reluctantly take on the waspish, elderly Mrs. Fisher and the stunning but aloof Lady Caroline Dester to defray expenses. The very genuine and open Lottie Wilkins, often muddled and awkward in her speech, has been married only a few years, but she and her husband are rubbing each other the wrong way; as the novel progresses, her intuition into her new friends' feelings and needs plays a major role. Rose Arbuthnot is a highly religious lady who does extensive charity work but is married to an author of racy popular novels who neglects her, partly because of her persistent disapproval of his work. Lady Caroline Dester is a beautiful socialite who is tired of the burden of London society and is beginning to regard her life as shallow and empty after a man she loved died in WWI. Mrs. Fisher is a pompous, snobbish, highly proper lady who knew many Victorian luminaries and regards herself as the hostess and in control of the holiday; she prefers to live in her memories of times past rather than embracing the present and is emotionally closed-off. The four women experience interpersonal tensions but eventually come together at the castle and find rejuvenation in the tranquil beauty of their surroundings, rediscovering hope and love.

Elizabeth von Arnim's ageless novel compellingly responds to the eternal question of how to achieve happiness in life. An immediate best seller upon its first publication, the story of unlikely female friendship, newfound empowerment, rekindled love, and unexpected romance has been adapted for stage and screen, including a 1991 Oscar-nominated film, and a Tony-nominated play in 2003. This much-beloved book appeals to anyone who appreciates the sly charm of Downton Abbey and The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel.
The Solitary Summer is a memoir about a quiet summer spent mostly alone in her garden by Elizabeth von Arnim (31 August 1866 - 9 February 1941), born Mary Annette Beauchamp, who was an Australian-born British novelist. By marriage she became Gr fin (Countess) von Arnim-Schlagenthin, and by a second marriage, Countess Russell. Although known in her early life as May, after the publication of her first book, she was known to her readers, eventually to her friends, and finally even to her family as Elizabeth. And she is now invariably referred to as Elizabeth von Arnim. She also wrote under the pen name Alice Cholmondeley.
