The thirteenth book in Emile Zola's Les Rougon-Macquart, a twenty-volume series, is titled Germinal. The novel, an unflinchingly severe and realistic account of a coalminers' strike in northern France in the 1860s, is frequently regarded as Zola's masterpiece and one of the most important works of French literature. It has been published and translated into more than one hundred languages. Additionally, it served as inspiration for two television shows and five film adaptations. Between April 1884 and January 1885, Germinal was written. It was first published as a serial between November 1884 and February 1885 in the magazine Gil Blas, after which it was published as a book in March 1885. The name of a spring-themed month on the French Republican Calendar is referenced in the title. The word "germin" comes from the Latin word for "seed," and in the book, it refers to the hope for a brighter future that germinates among the miners. Etienne Lantier, previously seen in L' Assommoir (1877), is the central character in Germinal. The miners' lives are played out against a backdrop of severe poverty and oppression. Some of Zola's best scenes from the novel are set in the mining community.

L'oeuvre is the fourteenth novel in the Rougon-Macquart series by mile Zola. It was first serialized in the periodical Gil Blas beginning in December 1885 before being published in novel form by Charpentier in 1886. The title, translated literally as "The Work" (as in work of art), is often rendered in English as The Masterpiece or His Masterpiece. It refers to the struggles of the protagonist Claude Lantier to paint a great work reflecting his talent and genius. Plot summary: Painter Claude Lantier advocates painting real subjects in real places, most notably outdoors. This is in stark contrast to the artistic establishment, where artists painted in the studio and concentrated on mythological, historical and religious subjects. His art making is revolutionary and he has a small circle of like-minded friends equally intent on shaking up the art world and challenging the establishment. His best friends are his childhood comrades Pierre Sandoz, novelist and Louis Dubuche, an architect. Like Zola, Sandoz contemplates a series of novels about a family based in science and incorporating modern people and everyday lives. Dubuche is not half as bold as Claude and, although a painter, finds music to be his passion. He chooses a more conventional course, opting for the security of a middle-class life and a bourgeois marriage. Sandoz also pursues marriage - not for love but stability and to better understand what he is writing about. The outcry in the artistic community over the sidelining of new artists in favor of popular, established, traditional artists at the annual Salon of the Acad mie des Beaux-Arts leads to the creation of a Salon des Refus s for the rejected artists to display their work. No painting gathers more interest or generates more criticism than Claude's. Entitled Plein Air (Open Air), it depicts a nude female figure in the front center and two female nudes in the background, with a fully dressed man, back to the viewer in the foreground.

Kirja alkaa kesällä 1870, jolloin vakavien diplomaattisten jännitteiden jälkeen Ranska on julistanut sodan Preussille. Ranskalaiset toivoivat saavuttavansa nopean voiton marssimalla armeijansa itään, suoraan Berliiniin. Sen sijaan Preussin armeijat ylittivät Reinin ennen ranskalaisia, löivät Ranskan Reinin armeijan vetäytymään ja hyökkäsivät Ranskaan. Romaani on ylivoimaisesti pisin Rougon-Macquart-sarjasta. Sen päähenkilö on Jean Macquart, maanviljelijä, joka menetettyään vaimonsa ja maansa (mitä tapahtumia kuvataan romaanissa La Terre) on liittynyt armeijaan vuoden 1870 kutsunnoissa. Pääteemana on sodan julmuus. Èmile Zola (1840-1902) oli ranskalainen romaanikirjailija, naturalistisen kirjallisuuden tunnetuin edustaja.
