For millennia, Buddhists have enjoyed the limitless benefits of meditation. But how does it work? And why? The principles behind this ancient practice have long eluded some of the best minds in modern science. Until now. This groundbreaking work, with a foreword by bestselling author Daniel Goleman, invites us to join in unlocking the secrets behind the practice of meditation. Working with neuroscientists, the author provides clear insights into modern research, which indicates that systematic training in meditation can enhance activity in areas of the brain associated with happiness and compassion. With an infectious joy and insatiable curiosity, Yongey Mingyur Rinpoche weaves together the principles of Tibetan Buddhism, neuroscience, and quantum physics in a way that will forever change the way we understand the human experience. And using the basic meditation practices, he offers readers a chance to recognize the unlimited potential of our own minds.

Intended as a companion to the recently published, Evidence-Based Cosmetic Breast Surgery (978-3-319-53957-7), Evidence-Based Body Contouring Surgery and VTE Prevention once again concentrates on the science, relying on data rather than expert opinion. In his familiar detail-oriented style, Eric Swanson critically evaluates popular body contouring procedures such as liposuction, abdominoplasty, arm lifts, thigh lifts, and buttock fat transfer. The source material is published in the major peer-reviewed plastic surgery journals. The conclusions frequently challenge conventional wisdom. Fat redistribution theory is dispelled. A unique chapter titled “The Metabolic Effect of Liposuction” reveals some surprising positive effects of liposuction. The limitations of alternative nonsurgical treatments are the subject of a chapter titled “Evaluating New Technologies.” A novel chapter describes SAFE (Spontaneous breathing, Avoid gas, Face up, Extremities mobile) anesthesia as a replacement for traditional general endotracheal anesthesia – lowering risk, minimizing blood loss, and reducing recovery times. The last two chapters will have many readers reconsidering traditional methods of venous thromboembolism (VTE) prevention. Chapter 12 exposes the shortcomings of risk prediction methods and routine anticoagulation. The final chapter describes the use of ultrasound for VTE surveillance. These chapters will likely find an audience among surgeons from all specialties and anesthesiologists. For scientifically inclined readers, whether seasoned surgeons or residents, this unique resource may well lead to evidence-based changes in their practices.

We all go through seasons of desperation and disappointments. Maybe we go to college with thoughts of making a difference in the world, but then after the first semester we start to wonder if we will even get a job. Perhaps it could be as simple as being married and fulfilling a dream of having a loving family. But then we approach 30 years of age and then 40 years and a season of depression seeps into every thought as reality hits us and now we struggle with what to live for. But then there are others who end up with the dream job or getting married to the prince charming or beauty queen, but then life doesn't end up the way we had hoped. We struggle to get up for work in the morning. The prince charming or beauty queen turns out to be a beast and we end up having a season of depression and we wonder if dreams are even worth having. I think we all know of someone who is struggling with disappointment. Maybe we have friends who are looking at the road they find themselves and are wonder if they should give up, keep going, or change directions. I imagine there are many self-help books with what they perceive to be the solution. So how does this book stand out? I feel the solution to the problem of disappointment is found in the Bible and specifically how we view God working in our lives. I refer back to my personal experience as I guide the reader through how I overcame, and still gain victory, through my seasons of disappointment. Let's go on a journey together as we enter into the realm of joy and away from the trap of depression.

In the year 2007, the number of people living in the cities of the world—finally and irreversibly—exceeded the number of people living in rural areas. The earth’s population is now more urban than rural, and Christian leaders are trying to figure out what this means for the church. Pastors and kingdom-minded leaders know they need to engage the surrounding community with the gospel but are unsure about how to do so. Ministering in diverse and populous areas brings a unique set of challenges and promises. Evangelistic strategies that work in rural areas seem to bounce off of people in the cities, forcing church leaders to reevaluate church effectiveness. They see that the arena for significant impact is the surrounding community. The wide-open potential for spiritual and social change on this larger scale requires that leaders leverage the multivalent domains of their communities to solve problems the entire city cares about. Eric Swanson and Sam Williams have been working together with missional leaders from cities around the world trying to discover examples and principles of city transformation. They try, investigate, and share effective and proven ways for ministry leaders to mobilize for spiritual impact and partner with other community organizations for societal good. This book is a call to action for spiritual and societal transformation. The authors begin casting their vision for God’s work in cities with an overview of the importance of cities in the twenty-first century. They address the process of community transformation along with examples of where and how cities have been changed for the good throughout history. They challenge readers to a vibrant kingdom-orientation in their ministries and use the concepts of “whole church, whole gospel, and whole city” to explain this large vision. They encourage people of good faith to work together with people of goodwill for the common benefit of cities around the world. To Transform a City is a timely, compelling book that helps readers explore the reality of cities, the potential of their own communities, and the broad strategies churches and Christian leaders need for kingdom impact.

Yongey Mingyur is one of the most celebrated among the new generation of Tibetan meditation masters, whose teachings have touched people of all faiths around the world. His first book, The Joy of Living, was a New York Times bestseller hailed as "compelling, readable, and informed" (Buddhadharma) and praised by Richard Gere, Lou Reed, and Julian Schnabel for its clarity, wit, and unique insight into the relationship between science and Buddhism. His new book, Joyful Wisdom, addresses the timely and timeless problem of anxiety in our everyday lives. "From the 2,500-year-old perspective of Buddhism," Yongey Mingyur writes, "every chapter in human history could be described as an 'age of anxiety.' The anxiety we feel now has been part of the human condition for centuries." So what do we do? Escape or succumb? Both routes inevitably lead to more complications and problems in our lives. "Buddhism," he says, "offers a third option. We can look directly at the disturbing emotions and other problems we experience in our lives as stepping-stones to freedom. Instead of rejecting them or surrendering to them, we can befriend them, working through them to reach an enduring authentic experience of our inherent wisdom, confidence, clarity, and joy." Divided into three parts like a traditional Buddhist text, Joyful Wisdom identifies the sources of our unease, describes methods of meditation that enable us to transform our experience into deeper insight, and applies these methods to common emotional, physical, and personal problems. The result is a work at once wise, anecdotal, funny, informed, and graced with the author's irresistible charm.
