A must-read for espionage junkies and 'chaps in scraps' fans. When Carruthers receives a letter from his friend Davies suggesting a Baltic sailing trip the vision of a manned yacht, A1 scenery and excellent duck shooting quickly works its charm. Much to Carruther's disgust, the reality couldn't be more different. If the Dulcibella is distressingly underwhelming, Davies' ambition for their sailing trip is anything but. There has been suspicious German activity along the coast. "The Medusa," manned by the sinister Dollman, has already tried to destroy him. Why should anyone want to kill Davies? What are the Germans trying to hide? Nothing less than a plot to invade Britain. And only these two courageous Englishmen can stop them. "The Riddle of the Sands" is Erskine Childers only novel. Published in 1903 it is considered the first modern spy novel.

Erskine Childers was an Irish nationalist who smuggled guns to Ireland in his yacht 'Asgard'. He was executed during the Irish Civil War, but before his death he managed to write a novel called 'The Riddle of the Sands', an early example of the classic spy story that ranks with the work of John le Carr and John Buchan, the latter of whom was in fact highly influenced by it. The gripping plot concerns two English sailors who uncover a militarist conspiracy in the Frisian Islands.

When Charles Carruthers receives a letter from a university friend Arthur Davies asking if he wants to join him yachting in the Frisian Islands off the northern coast of Germany, he envisions a pleasant holiday from his job in the Foreign Office. Upon arriving, he finds that the 'yacht' is a converted life boat with no other crew other than the two of them, and that his friend's plan is to chart the channels and islands of the shore against the possibility of war with Germany. As the season advances and the weather worsens, it becomes clear that there is a deeper secret hidden in the off shore islands, and forces that will do anything to stop Carruthers and Davies from discovering the answer to The Riddle of the Sands

While on a duck-hunting holiday sailing in the Frisian Isles, Carruthers and his friend Davies become suspicious of German naval activity off the North Sea Coast. The pair decide to investigate, and are soon embroiled in a world of suspense and intrigue, and the pair set about foiling nothing less than a plot to invade England. Initially published in 1903, The Riddle of the Sands proved a prescient vision of the Anglo-German conflict that was to culminate in the First World War. This thrilling adventure is now regarded as the first - and one of the best - spy novels ever written, inspiring later masters of the genre from John Buchan to John le Carre.
