How can the dichotomy between body and language be overcome by means of the performing arts? What does the art of performing contribute to philosophical, ethical, and political thinking today? This book is a study of the body and language on the stage. Inspired by contemporary artistic research and performance philosophy, Esa Kirkkopelto proposes a new understanding of embodiment that has no direct counterpart in existing philosophies of the body, in natural science, or in everyday experience. The way a performer imagines their body in performance breaks with body–language dichotomies, so language and body can be conceived as co-original phenomena, beyond their anthropomorphic framing. Once we recognize the native relationship between body and language, we can acquire an evolutive perspective which reaches beyond ontological or transcendental paradigms, towards a more linguistic and corporeal coexistence of diverse beings. This book shows how radically different the universe appears when conceived through the performing body. It addresses artists and philosophers alike.

Mitä esiintyvillä taiteilla, erityisesti näyttelijäntaiteella, on annettavanaan filosofiselle, eettiselle ja poliittiselle ajattelulle tänä päivänä? Logomimesis. Tutkielma esiintyvästä ruumiista on filosofinen ja taiteellinen tutkielma esiintyvistä taiteista, ruumiista ja kielestä. Omintakeisen filosofisen analyysin ja toisaalta tarkankokemusperäisen kuvauksen avulla teos näyttää, mihin taiteellinen tutkimus taiteellisten ilmiöiden tutkimuksena voi yltää ja kuinka se voi osallistua yhteiseen tiedonmuodostukseen tässä ja nyt. Se summaa tekijänsä monivuosikymmenisen filosofisen työn esiintyvien taiteiden tekijänä ja tutkijana. Teos synnyttää uudenlaista ymmärrystä ruumiillisuudesta, jolla ei ole suoraa vastinetta olemassa olevien ruumiin filosofioiden, luonnontieteen eikä arkikokemuksen piirissä. Kun esiintyvää ruumista tarkastellaan kielellisenä ilmiönä, kielen jäljittelynä - logomimesiksenä - alkaa taiteellisen kokemuksen ja muiden kokemuksen lajien välille ilmetä odottamattomia yhteyksiä. Esa Kirkkopelto on esitystaiteilija, filosofi ja taiteilija-tutkija. Hänen tutkimuksensa kohteena on esiintyvän ruumiin dekonstruktio sekä teoriassa että käytännössä. Vuosina 2007 2018 Kirkkopelto toimi Taideyliopistossa taiteellisen tutkimuksen professorina. Tällä hetkellä hän työskenteleesamassa toimessa Lundin yliopistossa. Hän on myös Toisissa tiloissa -esitystaideryhmän perustajajäsen.

Kiasman kokoelmanäyttely 22.4.2016-29.1.2017Taide voi koskettaa monin tavoin. Teokset haastavat katsojan tulemaan lähemmäs ja kokemaan ne muutenkin kuin näkemällä. Taide tunkeutuu sisään paitsi silmistä, myös korvista, sormenpäistä, nenästäkin sanalla sanoen, se tulee iholle.
