Evelyn Underhill

Practical Mysticism is an outstanding guide to experiencing and understanding mystical experiences by renowned scholar Evelyn Underhill. Underhill's books are appreciated and praised to this day by scholars and enthusiasts of spiritualism, and even psychologists seeking explanation of the spiritual component of human behaviour. In Practical Mysticism, the author introduces and unveils key tenets of mysticism for the ordinary reader. Highly inclusive, Underhill proposes that the spiritual discoveries and self-discovery of mysticism are available to every person, and that all it takes is the will and persistence to embark on the voyage. Although praised for her work on Christian mysticism, Underhill is careful to note that her general take on spiritual experiences is not tied to one, or indeed any, formal religion. Rather she is of the opinion that the journey to spiritual awakening is a vital one for those wishing to better understand and come to terms with the complex universe we live in.

Mysticism is Evelyn Underhill's timeless manual, which offers thorough and rich guidance to the principles of mystical Christianity. A classic since its publication in 1911, Mysticism remains an authority on its subject. Despite more modern works providing a more updated or formal analysis of Christian mysticism, none do so with the passion and splendour with which Underhill tackles the subject. Having herself had spiritual experiences, the author mentions that such events inspire those who feel them to action rather than to continual idle reflection of the divine. This publication is derived from treasured 12th edition, renowned for its mindful revisions and additions Underhill appended. In reaction to earlier reviews, additional notes are appended to clarify some of the deeper passages and aid the comprehensive flow of the chapters.

An exploration of the nature of reality, mysticism begins with the individual struggle toward a clear vision and culminates in a transformed consciousness. This marvelous guide to the contemplative life originated with the reflection of an unknown fourteenth-century priest who believed that a "cloud of unknowing" separates people from God. This cloud, he maintained, cannot be penetrated by intellect ? only by love. The Cloud of Unknowing offers an approach to contemplative life that finds holiness at a level deeper than physical experience and beyond language or image. The author advises placing all thought and mental imagery behind a metaphorical "cloud of forgetting" while seeking to love the divine. Hidden from the infinite consciousness by a "cloud of unknowing," divine love can be reached through monologistic prayer ? a single-word prayer, like a mantra, that assists in abandoning all extraneous thought. Seekers can thus attain an inner silence, where they may "be still and know the sacred." The author's spiritual gifts, combined with his humorous and straightforward approach, offer a view of divinity that never loses the common touch. Written in everyday language and edited by a popular authority on mysticism, this venerable work can be understood and appreciated by any reader. Includes a new Introduction by Kim Boykin, author of Zen for Christians.

The Life of the Spirit and the Life of To-day By Evelyn Underhill

Offering different essays of the practice of mysticism Underhill gives a thorough treatment of the practice that relies on experience rather than logic to justify the matters of faith. While a dangerous path to follow as it can quickly lead to paths away from God, this thinking is valid to a point in that we must be able to experience the fullness of God in some way to be fully alive in the realization of who God the Father is.

Remaining a classic in its field, this book explains first how mysticism relates to such things as vitalism, theology psychology, symbolism and magic. This treatment may seem unusual for Christian mysticism, but it relates widely to the world as we know it and the different practices therein. Part Two explores the awakening, purification and illumination of yourself and gives solid groundwork for such things as voices, visions dreams and other mystical experience.

In this short work (subtitled "A Little Book For Normal People") Evelyn Underhill, one of the 20th Century's leading scholars of Christian Mysticism, seeks "to put the view of the universe and man's place in it which is common to all mystics in plain and untechnical language; and to suggest the practical conditions under which ordinary persons may participate in their experience."
