An Outline of Marlborough's Campaigns & The Battle of Blenheim 'Corporal' John Churchill's finest military triumphs Even before the commencement of the eighteenth century, the low-lying tract of country enclosed between the French frontier, the Meuse and the North Sea had fully established its unenviable reputation as 'The Cockpit of Europe.' Great Britain, France, Spain and Holland fought out their differences on its fertile well-watered plains, without regard to the misery they inflicted on the unfortunate inhabitants. The 'Low Countries' had long been the training-ground of the British Army and the school in which its officers had learned the art of war. First making its appearance, more or less unofficially, in support of the Dutch in their heroic efforts to free themselves from the Spanish yoke, Great Britain had then aided France in her conflict with Spain and had been finally drawn into the long and deadly struggle waged by William III. to protect the United Provinces from the aggression of Louis XIV. This was the stage upon which the great Duke of Marlborough led his army from victory to victory during the hard-fought campaigns of the War of the Spanish Succession. The names of those battles, - Blenheim, Ramillies, Oudenarde and Malplaquet -contested during this period, became iconic and adorn the flags of famous regiments. They made a national hero of the commander of those soldiers and cemented his reputation as one of the most accomplished generals in his nation's history. Maycock's readable and excellent work, written from an academic military perspective is enhanced by Belloc's brilliant analysis of Blenheim taken from his 'Battles' series. Leonaur editions are newly typeset and are not facsimiles; each title is available in softcover and hardback with dustjacket.

Napoleon at the pinnacle of his military geniusCaptain Maycock, of the Suffolk Regiment, was the author of several concise histories of military campaigns, including those of the Napoleonic era. These were primarily written for a military readership, but are of interest to a wider audience who study military history. Modern readers appreciate that Maycock's works were written from the perspective of the later 19th century, but this makes them no less useful. The campaign analysed in this book was a triumph for Napoleon following his disappointment at having to abandon his scheme to invade Britain and the defeat of the Franco-Spanish navies at Trafalgar by the Royal Navy. Turning away from the sea, Napoleon's genius was unfettered in a land-based campaign and he marched to the east gaining victories at Ulm and Austerlitz which put an end to the third coalition of allies who opposed him. Maycock's text concludes with an assessment of the campaign in Italy and the Tyrol. This Leonaur edition has been enhanced by the inclusion of maps and illustrations which were not in the original edition . Leonaur editions are newly typeset and are not facsimiles; each title is available in softcover and hardback with dustjacket.

Part of the acclaimed "Special Campaign" series of works intended for serious professional students of military history each volume is interspersed with strategical and tactical comments and illustrated by numerous sketches. Marlborough's leadership of the Allied armies from 1701 to 1710 during The War of the Spanish Succession consolidated Britain's emergence as a front-rank power, while his ability to maintain unity demonstrated his diplomatic skills. He is often remembered by military historians as much for his organisational and logistic skills as tactical abilities. However, he was also instrumental in moving from the siege warfare that dominated the Nine Years' War, arguing one battle was worth ten sieges.

Part of the acclaimed "Special Campaign" series of works intended for serious professional students of military history each volume is interspersed with strategical and tactical comments and illustrated by numerous sketches. The 1814 campaign in France was Napoleon's final campaign. Following their victory at Leipzig, Russian, Austrian and other German armies invaded France. Despite the disproportionate forces in favour of the Coalition, Napoleon managed to inflict many defeats. However, the Coalition kept advancing towards Paris, which capitulated in late March 1814. Napoleon was deposed and exiled to Elba and the victorious powers started to redraw the map of Europe. Napoleon escaped from Elba the following year leading to the last conflict in the Napoleonic Wars, the defeat of Napoleon at the Battle of Waterloo.
