A Little Princess is a children's novel by Frances Hodgson Burnett, first published as a book in 1905. It is an expanded version of the short story Sara Crewe: or, What Happened at Miss Minchin's, which was serialized in St. Nicholas Magazine from December 1887. The story develops as follows: Sara Crewe, an exceptionally intelligent and imaginative student at Miss Minchin's Select Seminary for Young Ladies, is devastated when her adored, indulgent father dies. Now penniless and banished to a room in the attic, Sara is demeaned, abused, and forced to work as a servant. How this resourceful girl's fortunes change again is at the center of A Little Princess, one of the best-loved stories in all of children's literature. Based on a 2007 online poll, the U. S. National Education Association named the book one of its "Teachers' Top 100 Books for Children". In 2012 it was ranked number 56 among all-time children's novels in a survey published by School Library Journal, a monthly with primarily U. S. audience. It was the second of two Burnett novels among the Top 100, with The Secret Garden number 15. This classic title has been published by RADLEY BOOKS. The Secret Garden is a novel by Frances Hodgson Burnett. It was initially published in serial form beginning in 1910, and rst published in its entirety in 1911. It is now one of Burnett's most popular novels, and considered a classic of English children's literature. The story runs as follows: after losing her parents and being shipped from India to the Yorkshire Moors, Mary Lennox is terribly lonely living in her uncle s gloomy mansion. But one day, she learns of a secret garden in the grounds and uncovers an old key which leads her to the hidden door. Slowly, she turns the key and enters a world she could never have imagined. Several stage and lm adaptations have been made. With the rise of scholarly work in children's literature over the past quarter-century, The Secret Garden has risen steadily in prominence. It is often noted as one of the best children's books of the twentieth century. Jeffrey Masson considers The Secret Garden "one of the greatest books ever written for children".

It is an expanded version of the short story Sara Crewe: or, What Happened at Miss Minchin's, which was serialized in St. Nicholas Magazine from December 1887. According to Burnett, after she composed the 1902 play A Little Un-fairy Princess based on that story, her publisher asked that she expand the story as a novel with "the things and people that had been left out before". The novel was published by Charles Scribner's Sons (also publisher of St. Nicholas) with illustrations by Ethel Franklin Betts and the full title A Little Princess: Being the Whole Story of Sara Crewe Now Being Told for the First Time. Based on a 2007 online poll, the U. S. National Education Association named the book one of its "Teachers' Top 100 Books for Children". Mrs. Burnett's children are very real and attractive beings. Forlorn little Meg and Robin, whose Illinois home is ruled by an aunt, not actively unkind, but merely "advanced" beyond maternal sympathy and affection to an intimate and practical acquaintance with all matters agricultural, have caught some echoes from the enthusiasm of the founders of the Great White City
