Sa vie a un charme puissant, celui qui r sulte de l'alliance de la grandeur de la pens e avec la simplicit du coeur, la modestie et le naturel, alliance trop rare, et que l'on prise doublement en raison de sa raret m me.

Practical Physiology of Plants
Francis Darwin; Hamilton Acton E.
Cambridge University Press

Published in 1895, this is the second edition of an original 1894 volume. It was co-authored by Edward Hamilton Acton (1862–95) and Francis Darwin (1848–1925), a son of Charles Darwin, who worked with his father on a series of experiments dealing with plant movement. The text is the product of a course of instruction in the physiology of plants given at Cambridge University. To enable the students to carry out their work effectively written instructions were needed, and these instructions were elaborated to form the basis of the book. It is divided into two sections: section one deals with general physiology and is of a more elementary character; part two deals with the chemistry of metabolism and is necessarily more complicated. This book will be of value to anyone with an interest in botany, science education or the history of science.

Selected Letters on Evolution and Origin of Species is a collection of correspondence by the renowned naturalist and scientist, Charles Darwin. The book features a selection of letters written by Darwin to his colleagues, friends, and family, covering a period of more than twenty years. The letters offer a fascinating insight into Darwin's thinking and research, and provide a unique perspective on the development of his ideas on evolution and the origin of species. The book is divided into several sections, each of which focuses on a different aspect of Darwin's work. The first section covers his early research on geology and natural history, while the second section explores his interest in the theory of evolution. The third section delves into Darwin's extensive research on the origin of species, including his famous work, On the Origin of Species by Means of Natural Selection. Throughout the book, readers will gain a deeper understanding of Darwin's scientific method, as well as his personal struggles and triumphs. The letters provide a glimpse into the challenges he faced in developing and promoting his ideas, as well as the support he received from his colleagues and friends. Selected Letters on Evolution and Origin of Species is an essential read for anyone interested in the history of science or the development of evolutionary theory. The book is a valuable resource for scholars, students, and anyone who wants to learn more about one of the most influential scientists of all time. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations. "... I think that I have succeeded in showing. . . kind of movement common to all parts of all plants from their earliest youth." - Charles Darwin, The Life and Letters of Charles Darwin, Volume II (1880) The Power of Movement in Plants (1880) includes illustrations and documents the extensive research and study of phototropism among other plant movements by Charles Darwin and his son, Francis. The chapters focus particularly on a plant's evolution and adaptation to external stimuli with particular attention to circumnutation. This in-depth research is a must-read for lovers of the origins of botany and biology.
