'Enigmatic, vatic, emphatic, passionate . . . Nietzsche's works together make a unique statement in the literature of European ideas' A. C. GraylingNietzsche was one of the most revolutionary thinkers in Western philosophy, and Thus Spoke Zarathustra remains his most influential work. It describes how the ancient Persian prophet Zarathustra descends from his solitude in the mountains to tell the world that God is dead and that the Superman, the human embodiment of divinity, is his successor. With blazing intensity, Nietzsche argues that the meaning of existence is not to be found in religious pieties or meek submission, but in an all-powerful life force: passionate, chaotic and free. Translated with an introduction by R. J. HOLLINGDALE

'For all things are baptised at the fount of eternity and beyond good and evil; but good and evil are themselves mere shadows ...' Thus Spoke Zarathustra (1885) was Nietzsche's own favourite among all his books and has proved to be his most popular, having sold millions of copies in many different languages. In it he addresses the problem of how to live a fulfilling life in a world without meaning, in the aftermath of 'the death of God'. Nietzsche's solution lies in the idea of eternal recoming which he calls 'the highest formula of affirmation that can ever be attained'. A successful engagement with this profoundly Dionysian idea enables us to choose clearly among the myriad possibilities that existence offers, and thereby to affirm every moment of our lives with others on this 'sacred' earth. This translation of Zarathustra conveys the musicality of the original German, and for the first time annotates the abundance of allusions to the Bible and other classic texts with which Nietzsche's masterpiece is in conversation. ABOUT THE SERIES: For over 100 years Oxford World's Classics has made available the widest range of literature from around the globe. Each affordable volume reflects Oxford's commitment to scholarship, providing the most accurate text plus a wealth of other valuable features, including expert introductions by leading authorities, helpful notes to clarify the text, up-to-date bibliographies for further study, and much more.

Thus Spoke Zarathustra stands alone among Nietzsche's published works as a poetic and narrative rendering of his most sophisticated ideas through the medium of Zarathustra's uniquely prophetic voice. It is also the first place where Nietzsche proposes his theory of will to power, and it is the only place in his published works where he elaborates his concept of the superhuman and his doctrine of eternal recurrence. Nietzsche himself regarded this book as his most important philosophical contribution because it proposes solutions to the problems he poses but does not resolve in his other works—for example, his cure for the human disposition to vengefulness and his creation of new values as the antidote to nihilism. This translation precisely and consistently renders each element so that readers may experience Nietzsche's phrasing, wit, and wordplay in equivalent English. The extensive editorial notes in this edition include numerous cross-references to earlier drafts and variants that are found in his notebooks, and published in Volumes 14 and 15 of The Complete Works, thus allowing the reader to view the evolution of Nietzsche's thought from first drafts to their final published versions. The Translators' Afterword includes a discussion of translation issues unique to Zarathustra, and a glossary of key terms, as well as a discussion of Nietzsche's views concerning this book's contributions to the development of the German language.

A bold invitation to question everything we believe about truth, morality, and human potential—this deluxe hardbound edition brings together two revolutionary works that shaped modern thought and continue to inspire every reader who dares to think freely. The Best of Friedrich Nietzsche unites two of the philosopher’s most transformative works: Thus Spoke Zarathustra and Beyond Good and Evil. In these pages, Nietzsche dismantles inherited truths and dares readers to rise beyond conformity, fear, and moral comfort. Zarathustra speaks in poetic vision about the human spirit’s capacity for reinvention, while Beyond Good and Evil delivers his fearless critique of morality, power, and belief. Together, they form a manifesto for freedom, courage, and creativity. Presented in a deluxe hardbound edition, this volume is both a philosophical landmark and an inspiring companion for those who choose to live and think on their own terms.
