The Double centers on a government clerk who goes mad. It deals with the internal psychological struggle of its main character, Yakov Petrovich Golyadkin, who repeatedly encounters someone who is his exact double in appearance but confident, aggressive, and extroverted, characteristics that are the polar opposites to those of the toadying "pushover" protagonist. The motif of the novella is a doppelg nger (Russian "dvoynik"). Golyadkin is a titular councillor. This is rank 9 in the Table of Ranks established by Peter the Great. As rank eight led to hereditary nobility, 3] being a titular councillor is symbolic of a low-level bureaucrat still struggling to succeed. Golyadkin has a formative discussion with his Doctor Rutenspitz, who fears for his sanity and tells him that his behavior is dangerously antisocial. He prescribes "cheerful company" as the remedy. Golyadkin resolves to try this, and leaves the office. He proceeds to a birthday party for Klara Olsufyevna, the daughter of his office manager. He was uninvited, and a series of faux pas lead to his expulsion from the party. On his way home through a snowstorm, he encounters his double, who looks exactly like him. The following two thirds of the novel then deals with their evolving relationship. At first, Golyadkin Sr. (the original main character) and Golyadkin Jr. (his double) are friends, but Golyadkin Jr. proceeds to attempt to take over Sr.'s life, and they become bitter enemies. Because Golyadkin Jr. has all the charm, unctuousness and social skills that Golyadkin Sr. lacks, he is very well-liked among the office colleagues. At the story's conclusion, Golyadkin Sr. begins to see many replicas of himself, has a psychotic break, and is dragged off to an asylum by Doctor Rutenspitz.

The first-person narrative is told from the point of view of Alexei Ivanovich, a tutor working for a Russian family living in a suite at a German hotel. The patriarch of the family, The General, is indebted to the Frenchman Des Grieux and has mortgaged his property in Russia to pay only a small amount of his debt. Upon learning of the illness of his wealthy aunt, "Grandmother", he sends streams of telegrams to Moscow and awaits the news of her demise. His expected inheritance will pay his debts and gain Mademoiselle De Cominges's hand in marriage. Alexei is hopelessly in love with Polina, the General's stepdaughter, and swears an oath of servitude to her. He told her while on a walk on the Schlangenberg (a mountain in the German town) that all she had to do was give the word and he would gladly walk off the edge and plummet to his death. This leads to her asking him to go to the town's casino and place a bet for her. He refuses at first but, when goaded and reminded of his oath of undying love and servility, he succumbs and ends up winning at the roulette table. He returns to her the winnings but she will not tell him the reason she needs money. She only laughs in his face (as she does when he professes his love) and treats him with cold indifference, if not downright malice. He only learns the details of The General's and Polina's financial state later in the story through his long-time acquaintance, Mr. Astley. Astley is a shy Englishman who seems to share Alexei's fondness of Polina. He comes from English nobility and has a good deal of money. One day while Polina and Alexei are on a walk they see a Baron and Baroness. Polina dares him to insult the aristocratic couple and he does so with little hesitation. This sets off a chain of events that details Madame de Cominges's interest in the General and gets Alexei fired as tutor of the General's children. Shortly after this, Grandmother shows up and surprises the whole party of debtors and indebted. She tells them all that she knows all about the General's debt and why the French man and woman are waiting around the suite day after day. She leaves the party of death-profiteers by saying that none of them are getting any of her money. She then asks Alexei to be her guide around the town famous for its healing waters and infamous for its casino where the tables are stacked with piles of gold; she wants to gamble. After being ushered to the roulette table, she plays and wins a significant amount of money. After a short return to the hotel, she comes back to roulette tables and she starts to get the bug; before she leaves the town, she's lost almost a hundred thousand roubles. When Alexei gets back to his room after sending Grandmother off at the railway station, he's greeted by Polina. She shows him a letter where Des Grieux says he has started legal proceedings to sell Generals' properties mortgaged to him, but he is returning properties worth fifty thousand roubles to General for Polina's benefit. Des Grieux says he feels he had fulfilled all his obligations that way. Polina's wishes she had fifty thousand to fling at Des Grieux's face. Upon hearing this, Alexei runs out of the room and to the casino where he wins over two hundred thousand roubles and becomes a rich man. When he gets back to his room and the waiting Polina, he empties his pockets full of gold and bank notes onto the bed. At first she accuses him of trying to buy her like Des Grieux, but then she embraces him. They fall asleep on the couch. Next day, she asks for fifty thousand and when he gives it to her, she flings that money at Alexei's face and runs off to Mr. Astley (they had been secretly meeting and exchanging notes and she was supposed to meet him night before but has come to Alexei room). He doesn't see her again.

Notes from Underground, also translated as Notes from the Underground or Letters from the Underworld, is an 1864 novella by Fyodor Dostoyevsky. Notes is considered by many to be the first existentialist novel. citation needed] It presents itself as an excerpt from the rambling memoirs of a bitter, isolated, unnamed narrator (generally referred to by critics as the Underground Man) who is a retired civil servant living in St. Petersburg. The first part of the story is told in monologue form, or the underground man's diary, and attacks emerging Western philosophy, especially Nikolay Chernyshevsky's What Is to Be Done?. The second part of the book is called " propos of the Wet Snow", and describes certain events that, it seems, are destroying and sometimes renewing the underground man, who acts as a first person, unreliable narrator.

he Possessed is among the best, yet complex books ever written by Dostoevsky. It has a deep political embedding of Russian, merging it with pure realism, exposing nihilism, portraying existentialism, plus dark atrocities, among them the murder of Shatov; the brother of Darya Pavlovna, along with Captain Lebyadkin, with his sister Marya Timofyevna, their elderly servant, as well as the death of Stepan Trofimovitch, Varvara Petrovna old friend for over twenty years. The book further illustrates the murder of Fedka: the runaway convict; the suicide of Kirillov; the death of Lizaveta, Marya Ignatyevna, and her toddler. It exposes the movement of an underground Secret Society plotted by Pyotr Stepanovitch, which aims to bring havoc, moral decadence, undermining all foundations, thus destroying the society with its principles and create social disorder in Russia with the concept of a guiding idea to overtake the present government under the rule of AndreyAntonovitch and his wife Yulia Mihailovna during the author's time, and the demise of Nikolay stravrogin Vsyevolodovitch; the son of Varvara Petrovna, along with his mental instability, and countless love affairs with Lizaveta Nikolaevna, Darya, and Shatov's wife Marya Ignatyevna, despite being married to the crippled, ugly Marya. The novel is set in a small town of Skvoreshniki, and is narrated by Govorov; who is both a respected member of the society plus a journalist, and follows to tell the story as it is written from the Biography of Stepan Trofimovitch, who is an ardent thinker, poet, and philosopher. From his narration, we are introduced to the relationship between Stephan and Varvara Petrovna, and it leads us to the development of Nikolay stravrogin Vsyevolodovitch, who is the central character in the book, and who further is home schooled by Stepan, until he reaches the age of joining the army. As it is with Dostoevsky novels, the Possessed seeks to explore existentialism; the human condition as to why we live, and the ideals that guide us. It further brings out the concept of redemption that perturbs the human conscience after committing an evil deed. The author analyses the self, and whether we have a prime idea for our existence.images (2) Unfolding Events in the Possessed/ the Devils by Fyodor Dostoevsky Stepan Trofimovitch, Pyotr Stepanovitch's father, who they are not in good terms, is a devoted friend to Varvara Petrovna; who has a notable reputation in Skvoreshniki and throughout Russia, and is separated from her husband General Stavrogin, a close friend to the governor. The two have a close relationship, and Stephan wishes to marry Varvara, but he never suggests anything to her. In the end their relationship turns out disastrous, and their friendship ends as Stephan leaves Skvoreshniki, only to fall sick in Spasov, where he is nursed by Sofya Matveyevna, until Varvara comes for him, but dies three days later. Varvara Petrovna carries his body back to Skvoreshniki, where it is buried in the precincts of a church covered with a marble slab. Pyotr Stepanovitch, Tolkatchenko, Shigalov, Lyamshin, Erkel, Liputin, and Virginsky, who are all members of the Quintet of the Secret Society, plot to kill Shatov; who they believe will turn traitor even after his wife Marie returning to him to give birth to a baby that belongs to Stavrogin. However Shigalov: an inherent thinker, walks out at the moment of the crime with his own conviction that their deed is nothing more than a personal vendetta rather than a threat to their Secret Society, and that it is no different from acts done by shallow rulers in the past, who did not have a sharp mental faculty to reason out things.
