Tragedy of the Huguenots - This is the tale of the Huguenot Wars written with many illustrations, maps, and pictures of actual people and locations mentioned within this book. Our English hero, Philip Fletcher, has a French connection on his mother's side. This encourages him to cross the Channel in order to take part in the Huguenot wars. Obviously he sides with the Protestants, distinguishes himself in various battles, and receives a swift promotion for his enthusiasm. With his daring personality, he carries out several secret missions. These assignments put him in very dangerous situations where he survives by using his wits, skills, and power. We learn a lot about this unfortunate war between Christians in France that costs the life of thousands and cripples the economy of the land. Many ill-treated Huguenots immigrated to other countries where they found acceptance and integration, such as America, Germany, England, and Switzerland. If you enjoy historical stories then you will want to read this book This story was written and published so that this essential part of our History will never be forgotten. Let this book take you back in time to a very interesting tale of life or death.

The THIRTY YEAR'S WAR is a troublesome story that takes place in the years 1618-1648 A. D. During this time there was a horrible religious conflict between the Protestants and the Catholics. This feud caused unbelievable suffering and death for almost 10 million people Many vicious battles and sieges destroyed the population and cities in the middle of Europe. Famine and sicknesses added to the suffering of women, men, and children. It did not matter if you were a famous military leader or a noble, no one was safe and just going to church at the wrong place, and the wrong time could get you killed Journey with young Hector Campbell during his career and observe his perilous way during this difficult era. Cardinal Richelieu and Cardinal Mazarin poured gas into this explosive situation and almost lost their lives Conspiracies were discovered almost every week; people were arrested, tortured and publicly killed with their extorted confession. The catholic France sided with the Protestants because they feared that strong Austria might soon rule most of Europe. France later persecuted the Protestants (Huguenots) by killing them or chasing them away. The whole controversy developed into a very unclear tragedy as different European rulers thirst for power grew. Neither side involved in this feud was willing to give in, causing it to last nearly 30 years Peace was finally signed in 1648 at M nster, Germany, and much property and land was newly distributed between the parties. Though it was unfair, the poor and the farmers got no reimbursement at all for their terrible losses At the end there was no winner or loser - we all lost If you enjoy historical stories then you will want to read this book This story was written and published so that this essential part of our History will never be forgotten. Many barbarous massacres happened - 27 nobles, knights, and citizens were publicly decapitated in Prague. I remember that, as a boy, I regarded any attempt to mix instruction with amusement as being as objectionable a practice as the administration of powder in jam; but I think that this feeling arose from the fact that in those days books contained a very small share of amusement and a very large share of instruction. I have endeavored to avoid this, and I hope that the accounts of battles and sieges, illustrated as they are by maps, will be found as interesting as the lighter parts of the story. As in my tale, "The Young Franc-Tireurs," I gave the outline of the Franco-German war, so I have now endeavored to give the salient features of the great Peninsular struggle. The military facts, with the names of generals and regiments, the dates and places, are all strictly accurate, and any one who has read with care the story of "The Young Buglers" could pass an examination as to the leading events of the Peninsular war.

You are nowadays called upon to acquire so great a mass of learning and information in the period of life between the ages of twelve and eighteen that it is not surprising that but little time can be spared for the study of the history of foreign nations. Most lads are, therefore, lamentably ignorant of the leading events of even the most important epochs of Continental history, although, as many of these events have exercised a marked influence upon the existing state of affairs in Europe, a knowledge of them is far more useful, and, it may be said, far more interesting than that of the comparatively petty affairs of Athens, Sparta, Corinth, and Thebes. Prominent among such epochs is the Thirty Years' War, which arose from the determination of the Emperor of Austria to crush out Protestantism throughout Germany. Since the invasion of the Huns no struggle which has taken place in Europe has approached this in the obstinacy of the fighting and the terrible sufferings which the war inflicted upon the people at large. During these thirty years the population of Germany decreased by nearly a third, and in some of the states half the towns and two-thirds of the villages absolutely disappeared.

A Final Reckoning by G. A. Henty An exciting adventure of outlaws in the early days of the Australian gold rush, when fortunes were made and stolen, and when bush rangers and natives constituted a real and formidable danger to the settlers. "All boys will read this story with eager and unflagging interest. The episodes are in Mr. Henty's very best vein--graphic, exciting, realistic; and, as in all Mr. Henty's books, the tendency is to the formation of an honourable, manly, and even heroic character."--Birmingham Post. Redskin and Cowboy A Tale of the Western Plains
The principal part of the tale is laid among the cow-boys of the Western States of America, a body of men unrivalled in point of hardihood and devotion to work, as well as in reckless courage and wild daring. The picture I have given of their life can be relied upon, and its adventures and dangers are in no degree coloured, as I have taken them from the lips of a near relative of my own who was for some years working as a cow-boy in New Mexico. He was an actor in many of the scenes described, and so far from my having heightened or embellished them, I may say that I have given but a small proportion of the perilous adventures through which he went, for had I given them in full it would, I am sure, have seemed to you that the story was too improbable to be true. In treating of cow-boy life, indeed, it may well be said that truth is stranger than fiction.
