ENGLISH DESCRIPTION One of Gabriel Garc a M rquez's most intricate and ambitious works, The Autumn of the Patriarch is a brilliant tale of a Caribbean tyrant and the corruption of power. From charity to deceit, benevolence to violence, fear of God to extreme cruelty, the dictator of The Autumn of the Patriarch embodies the best and the worst of human nature. Gabriel Garc a M rquez, the renowned master of magical realism, vividly portrays the dying tyrant caught in the prison of his own dictator-ship. Employing an innovative, dreamlike style, and overflowing with symbolic descriptions, the novel transports the reader to a world that is at once fanciful and real.
La Increíble Y Triste Historia de la Cándida Eréndira Y de Su Abuela Desalmada / The Incredible and Sad Tale of Innocent Eréndira and Her Heartless Gr
ENGLISH DESCRIPTIONThis exceptional book brings together the short novel that gives this book its title as well as six other stories. The times when the author wrote these stories were the years when Macondo opened the doors of magical realism to the author, where reality is expressed through magical and legendary formulas, and miracles are inserted into everyday life. The Incredible and Sad Tale of Innocent Er ndira and Her Heartless Grandmother personify innocence and evil, love and its distortion, and the story recalls medieval deeds and troubadour songs, as always, immersed in that dense and fruity world of the American Caribbean. These seven narratives are seven journeys into the world that the author had conquered once and for all.

In 1973, the film director Miguel Litt n fled Chile after a U. S.-supported military coup toppled the democratically elected socialist government of Salvador Allende. The new dictator, General Augusto Pinochet, instituted a reign of terror and turned Chile into a laboratory to test the poisonous prescriptions of the American economist Milton Friedman. In 1985, Litt n returned to Chile disguised as a Uruguayan businessman. He was desperate to see the homeland he'd been exiled from for so many years; he also meant to pull off a very tricky stunt: with the help of three film crews from three different countries, each supposedly busy making a movie to promote tourism, he would secretly put together a film that would tell the truth about Pinochet's benighted Chile--a film that would capture the world's attention while landing the general and his secret police with a very visible black eye. Afterwards, the great novelist Gabriel Garc a M rquez sat down with Litt n to hear the story of his escapade, with all its scary, comic, and not-a-little surreal ups and downs. Then, applying the same unequaled gifts that had already gained him a Nobel Prize, Garc a M rquez wrote it down. Clandestine in Chile is a true-life adventure story and a classic of modern reportage.

ENGLISH DESCRIPTION The novel, written between 1956 and 1957 while living in Paris, and first published in 1961, is the story of an impoverished, retired colonel, a veteran of the Thousand Days' War, who still hopes to receive the pension he was promised some fifteen years earlier. The colonel lives with his asthmatic wife in a small village under martial law. The action opens with the colonel preparing to go to the funeral of a town musician whose death is notable because he was the first to die from natural causes in many years. The main characters of the novel are not named, adding to the feeling of insignificance of an individual living in Colombia. The colonel and his wife, who have lost their son to political repression, are struggling with poverty and financial instability. The corruption of the local and national officials is evident and this is a topic which Garc a M rquez explores throughout the novel, by using references to censorship and the impact of government on society. The colonel desperately tries to sell their inheritance from their only son who is now dead and eventually the only reminder of his existence is a rooster that the colonel trains to take part in a cockfight.

ENGLISH DESCRIPTION The Story of a Shipwrecked Sailor is a work of non-fiction by Colombian writer Gabriel Garc a M rquez. The novel is about a shipwrecked sailor "Velasques" who struggles for ten days to reach the coast. In 1955, Garcia Marquez was working for El Espectador, a newspaper in Bogota, when in February of that year eight crew members of the Caldas, a Colombian destroyer, were washed overboard and disappeared. Ten days later one of them turned up, barely alive, on a deserted beach in northern Colombia. This book, which originally appeared as a series of newspaper articles, is Garcia Marquez's account of that sailor's ordeal.
