Troilus and Criseyde (c.1385) is an epic poem written by English poet Geoffrey Chaucer. Composed in Middle English, Troilus and Criseyde is the story of two lovers forced apart by the Greek siege of Troy. Often considered Chaucer’s finest work for its structural consistency and completeness, the poem adapts Homer’s Iliad and other ancient sources which expand on its tradition to tell a Christian moral tale about the importance of faith and the sacred nature of human love. After mocking the god of love, Troilus—a Trojan warrior and the youngest son of Priam—is struck with desire for the beautiful Criseyde, the daughter of a prophet named Calchas. With her uncle Pandarus’ help, the two begin to exchange letters before consummating their love in secret. Meanwhile, Calchas—who has predicted the fall of Troy and abandoned the city to join the Greeks—is negotiating with both sides in order to facilitate the release of Antenor in exchange for his daughter, Criseyde. Although Troilus and Hector object to the plan, Criseyde is sent to the Greek camp. Despite promising to return to Troy and to remain faithful to Troilus, she secretly doubts herself, and is soon courted by the Greek hero Diomede. Troilus and Criseyde, a masterpiece of medieval literature, is a tragic story of desire, will, and the divine that continues to move readers centuries after it was written. With a beautifully designed cover and professionally typeset manuscript, this edition of Geoffrey Chaucer’s Troilus and Criseyde is a classic of English literature reimagined for modern readers.

Geoffrey Chaucer was born in London sometime in the 1340s. The son of a vintner, it is believed that Chaucer came from a fairly well to do family, which enabled him as a young man to come into the service of the Countess of Ulster as the noblewoman's page, a common form of apprenticeship in medieval times. Eventually, it is believed, Chaucer would study law and this most likely afforded him the opportunity to become a member of the royal court of Edward III. In the service of the king he would have many duties taking him all over continental Europe. The wealth of knowledge Chaucer gained from these experiences most surely enabled him to become what most literary critics consider as the greatest English poet of the Middle Ages. Best known for his sweeping and monumental work "The Canterbury Tales", Chaucer also wrote numerous lesser known works of poetry. Chief among these is "Troilus and Criseyde". A retelling of the tragic love story of Trolius, the youngest son of King Priam, and his lover Criseyde, set against the backdrop of the Trojan War. "Troilus and Criseyde" is considered by some scholars as the poet's greatest work because, unlike "The Canterbury Tales", it is a complete and self-contained piece of epic poetry. Presented here is an extensively annotated edition that will be a welcome addition to the library of any reader. This edition is printed on premium acid-free paper.

Written (but left unfinished) in the 1300s by the English courtier, diplomat, philosopher, and poet Geoffrey Chaucer, The Canterbury Tales follows a group of pilgrims traveling to Canterbury Cathedral to visit the remains of Saint Thomas Becket. When the group stops at an inn, they agree to entertain each other on their journey by telling stories, with a reward for the traveler whose stories are best. From the noble Knight and his Squire to the spunky Wife of Bath, from the antagonistic Miller and Reeve to the Prioress, Nun, and Pardoner, Chaucer paints a vivid picture of medieval life. Even today, some 700 years after its initial publication, this classic of English literature endears itself to readers through its vivid characters, sparkling dialogue, raucus humor, and love of humanity. Important historically, it helped establish English as the language of British literature, replacing French and Latin and securing Chaucer's reputation as "the first finder of our fair language." This classic and thoroughly entertaining work has been newly designed and typeset in a large-format edition by Waking Lion Press.
