George Catlin kiinnostui intiaaneista vuonna 1828 nähtyään pääkaupunkiin matkalla olleen delegaation. Arvokkaan näköiset intiaanit olivat pukeutuneet näyttäviin asuihin kilpineen, päähineineen ja koristeltuine viittoineen. ”He olivat juuri sitä, mitä halusin nähdä ja ikuistaa siveltimelläni!” Catlin kirjoitti. Catlin otti elämäntehtäväkseen kuvata intiaaneja ja esitellä heidän kulttuureitaan ja tapojaan. Hän matkusti intiaanien parissa kuusi vuotta, metsästi heidän kanssaan ja seurasi heidän rituaalejaan. Tänä aikana hän kirjoitti muistiin yksityiskohtaisesti heidän tapojaan ja olojaan ja maalasi muotokuvia, kylänäkymiä ja maisemia. Hänen matkakirjansa ilmestyi ensimmäisen kerran 1841.
