George Herbert (1593–1633) is widely regarded as the greatest devotional poet in the English language. His profound influence can be seen in the lasting popularity of his verse. This selection of one hundred lyric poems by Herbert is designed for readers to enjoy the beauty, spirituality, accessibility and humanity of his best verse. Each poem uses the authoritative text from the acclaimed Cambridge edition of Herbert's poems, presenting them in their original spelling in a clear and elegant format. The selection includes such well-loved lyric verses as 'Love bade me welcome', 'Let all the world in ev'ry corner sing', 'I struck the board and cry'd, No more' and 'Sweet day, so cool, so calm, so bright'. A preface by Helen Wilcox, editor of the Cambridge edition, celebrates the key features of Herbert's poetry for a new generation of readers.

Welsh-born English poet, orator and Anglican priest George Herbert is one the most famous and popular of the metaphysical poets. Born in 1593 in Wales to a prominent and wealthy family, Herbert was educated at Westminster School as a child and later at Cambridge, where he earned a master's degree and became the university's Public Orator, a position he held for many years. Herbert was never a healthy person and he died at the age of 39 in 1633, a few short years after he left Cambridge and took holy orders in the Church of England. His poetry was published in the year of his death and became instantly popular and wide-read. All of Herbert's surviving poems are religious in nature, characterized by their directness of expression, intricate rhyme schemes, and the use of wordplay and puns. Included in this volume are the poems known collectively as "The Temple" as well as a selection of his prose works, most notably "The Country Parson". This edition is printed on premium acid-free paper.

"Herbert loved crafting language in new and powerful ways. It was for him a way of seeing and savoring and showing the wonders of Christ. The central theme of his poetry was the redeeming love of Christ, and he labored with all his literary might to see it clearly, feel it deeply, and show it strikingly. We don't have a single sermon that he ever preached.... What we have is his poetry. And here the beauty of the subject is wedded to the beauty of his craft." John Piper, IntroductionAlthough George Herbert was a pastor of a small remote church in Elizabethan England, he came to fame because of a small collection of poems called The Temple. In this short but beautiful collection of poetry, Herbert devised 116 new poetic forms to capture his experiences of awe, sorrow, glory, turmoil, repentance, and heart-rending joy, all of it dedicated to God, not man. In this book, we have a picture of the full range of human experience and emotion, felt by a man being sanctified by God and describing it with all his poetic powers." Sir, I pray deliver this little book to my dear brother ... and tell him he shall find in it a picture of the many spiritual conflicts that have passed betwixt God and my soul, before I could subject mine to the will of Jesus my Master, in whose service I have now found perfect freedom; desire him to read it: and then, if he can think it may turn to the advantage of any dejected poor soul, let it be made public; if not, let him burn it; for I and it are less than the least of God's mercies." George Herbert

George Herbert's prose and poetry is united in this combined volume, illustrating in detail the inner conflict the author felt regarding the principles of his faith and belief in God. Coming of age during the early 17th century, Herbert demonstrated a great appetite for intellectual endeavors while still a boy. While still in his twenties, he mastered Greek and Latin and was elected to the post of Public Orator at Trinity College, Cambridge. His theological knowledge and scholarly ability distinguished him from many of his peers. Throughout his life, Herbert suffered with physical infirmity and was never blessed with a strong constitution. Herbert perished of tuberculosis at the age of only thirty-nine, a mere three years after becoming ordained as a priest. As a person, he was reported to be of a gentle and caring demeanor, often going to great lengths to make his parishioners and guests comfortable. Most significantly, George Herbert left behind a substantial body of unpublished written work.

""It is difficult to conjecture how much George Herbert's return to the spiritual life was due to the sudden failure of royal patronage, and how much to his own devotion; but it is vain to pretend that it was at first an easy or a palatable change of front for him. 'In this time of retirement' in London and Kent], says Walton, 'he had many conflicts with himself, whether he should return to the painted pleasures of a court life, or betake himself to a study of divinity, and enter into sacred orders, to which his mother had often persuaded him. These were such conflicts as they only can know that have endured them; for ambitious desires, and the outward glory of this world, are not easily laid aside; but at last God inclined him to put on a resolution to serve at His altar.'"" --From the Introduction by Arthur Waugh George Herbert (1593-1633) was a Welsh-born poet, orator and Anglican priest. Herbert's poetry is associated with the writings of the metaphysical poets. He attended Trinity College in Cambridge, became the University's Public Orator, and attracted the attention of King James I. From 1624-1625, he served in the Parliament of England. After King James died, Herbert's interest in ordination was renewed. In his mid-thirties he took holy orders in the Church of England, and spent the rest of his life as the rector of St. Andrews Church in Lower Bemerton, Salisbury.
