Cooperative Learning through a Reflective Lens explores cooperative learning through the lens of reflective language teaching, delving into a wide range of issues on which teachers will want to reflect and suggesting ways that they could do that reflection. The book begins with background on cooperative learning including its theoretical roots and the research which supports its use. Next, eight principles for using cooperative learning are explained and examples are given as to how to implement those principles. Further highlighting the book' practical focus is a chapter on nuts and bolts matters that need to be considered when teachers help their students do cooperative learning. Of course, the light of reflection shines throughout the book, including in a chapter on how to encourage reflection among students on their own learning and on the functioning of their cooperative learning groups. Another chapter offers guidance on how reflection can inform teachers' use of cooperative learning with their students, as well as teachers' cooperation with their colleagues. The book finishes with example lessons which bring to life the principles and practicalities discussed in earlier chapters of the book.

This book is about how to teach English as a second language and how second language students learn. With Communicative Language Teaching (CLT) at its centre, it takes a practical approach to second language teaching backed up by clearly explained theory. Presenting eight essential principles across twelve chapters, the book covers Learner Autonomy, Social Learning, Integrated Curriculum, Meaning, Diversity, Thinking Skills, Alternative Assessment and Teacher Co-learning, and shows how technology and reflective teaching can be used to support and enhance these essentials in the classroom. Combining theory and practice, Essentials for Successful English Language Teaching explains how these principles interweave and support each other within the CLT paradigm, demonstrating why they are best implemented as a whole, rather than one at a time. Now revised and brought fully up to date, this new edition includes:- A brand new chapter covering technology and cooperation in teaching practice and how they support CLT-based activities- Vignettes for each essential principle to consolidate theory and demonstrate best practice- Updated real world examples, drawing on teaching experiences from North America, Africa and AsiaTaking a 'big picture' view that assumes no prior knowledge of linguistics or language education, Essentials for Successful English Language Teaching is an energising and fun guide for language practitioners.

This book helps teachers understand the links between cooperative learning (also known as collaborative learning and peer learning) and other student-centered approaches. It discusses cooperative learning and communities of practice; cooperative learning and neuroscience; cooperative learning and critical thinking; cooperative learning and alternative assessment; cooperative learning and multiple intelligence; cooperative learning and positive education; cooperative learning and meeting the needs of introverts; and cooperative learning and justice issues, with each chapter exploring a different aspect of how education can be student centered. If you are looking for a fresh perspective on cooperative learning, this book is for you. It helps you explore how cooperative learning is so much more than just asking students to arrange themselves in a group, and considers how cooperative learning can fit with other areas of education that you care about. Although the two authors both completed their PhDs in the West, they have taught in Asia for the past 25+ years, working with students and teachers from a wide variety of Asian and other countries, and with teachers from a very wide variety of content areas who teach students of many different ages.

Essentials For Successful English Language Teaching is about how we teach English Language Learners (ELLs) and how our ELLs learn. Farrell and Jacobs encourage those involved in teaching English to develop, maintain and rediscover the reasons that led them to take up the profession. They focus on the essentials in teaching the English language that teachers can implement in their instruction so that their students can excel in their learning: Encourage learner autonomy Emphasize the social nature of learning Develop curricular integration, focus on meaning Celebrate diversity Expand thinking skills Utilize alternative assessment, and Promote English language teachers as co-learners along with their students. These essentials are best implemented as a whole, rather than one at a time and so they are interwoven with each other to encourage a holistic teaching approach. Highly accessible, each chapter comes with case studies and a range of activities to encourage the reader to put each of the essentials into practice. With these the authors aim to bring an inner smile to all English language teachers that reassures them they made the right choice when they chose to become teachers of the English language. This reflective and engaging book will be invaluable to postgraduate students of TESOL and applied linguistics, and in-service language teachers.
