The rector sat on the box of his carriage, driving his horses toward his church, the grand old abbey-church of Glaston. His wife was inside, and an old woman-he had stopped on the road to take her up-sat with her basket on the foot-board behind. His coachman sat beside him; he never took the reins when his master was there. Mr. Bevis drove like a gentleman, in an easy, informal, yet thoroughly business-like way. His horses were black-large, well-bred, and well-fed, but neither young nor showy, and the harness was just the least bit shabby. Indeed, the entire turnout, including his own hat and the coachman's, offered the beholder that aspect of indifference to show, which, by the suggestion of a nodding acquaintance with poverty, gave it the right clerical air of being not of this world. Mrs. Bevis had her basket on the seat before her, containing, beneath an upper stratum of flowers, some of the first rhubarb of the season and a pound or two of fresh butter for a poor relation in the town.

I am-I will not say how old, but well past middle age. This much I feel compelled to mention, because it has long been my opinion that no man should attempt a history of himself until he has set foot upon the border land where the past and the future begin to blend in a consciousness somewhat independent of both, and hence interpreting both. Looking westward, from this vantage-ground, the setting sun is not the less lovely to him that he recalls a merrier time when the shadows fell the other way. Then they sped westward before him, as if to vanish, chased by his advancing footsteps, over the verge of the world. Now they come creeping towards him, lengthening as they come. And they are welcome.

By this edition of HAMLET I hope to help the student of Shakspere to understand the play-and first of all Hamlet himself, whose spiritual and moral nature are the real material of the tragedy, to which every other interest of the play is subservient. But while mainly attempting, from the words and behaviour Shakspere has given him, to explain the man, I have cast what light I could upon everything in the play, including the perplexities arising from extreme condensation of meaning, figure, and expression. As it is more than desirable that the student should know when he is reading the most approximate presentation accessible of what Shakspere uttered, and when that which modern editors have, with reason good or bad, often not without presumption, substituted for that which they received, I have given the text, letter for letter, point for point, of the First Folio, with the variations of the Second Quarto in the margin and at the foot of the page.

The story is simple but very sweet. It is a short story, and as such the plot is quick and rather limited in scope. MacDonald writes a story of a young couple gently falling in love and of their struggles during their first few years of marriage. The story is intended to show the importance of faith in life and marriage.

Lilith is a fantasy novel written by Scottish writer George MacDonald. It was first published in 1895. The novel is considered one of the darkest and deepest of MacDonald's works. In this novel, he presents a cyclical plot about life, death, punishment and salvation. George MacDonald was born in 1824 and died in 1905. He was one of the precursors of fantasy literature, and the source of inspiration to many writers, such as Lewis Carroll, Mark Twain, C. S. Lewis, J. R. R. Tolkien and Madeleine L'Engle. In addition to his many fairy-tale works, MacDonald also wrote poetry and, as a fervent Christian he was, he left several theological texts as well. His major fantasy texts are Phantastes (1858); The Princess and the Goblin (1872); The Princess and Curdie (1883); and Lilith (1895).
